Falco June Newsletter 2020
Newsletter for Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Middle School
A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Five Oaks and Rachel Carson Families,
This year has been particularly difficult with the early closure of school due to the pandemic. Staff and families have worked hard to support students as we navigate the new way to teach as we implemented “distance learning”. We are not sure the impact to the design of school in the fall or the impact to the finances of the school district.
We cannot ignore the event of George Floyd’s death and the unrest that has risen to the surface. The violence that is being experienced across the entire world is the response to the oppression and racism that has been experienced. I struggle as others do on what I can do to support our black students. The school dealt with many instances of racism this year. We know there are students that have been the target of racism but have not reported it to any adult in the school. They did not feel safe to report it. We need and want to do better. I have seen many disturbing images as I am glued to the television on the violence across our country. I won’t pretend that I have experienced the racism of our black students. I am saddened and angry that people are still feeling the level of racism that is prevalent today. Racism is not new and has been ongoing. We must listen and make change.
I wanted to take a moment to thank you for the best 15 years of my career. Coming to Beaverton School District was the smartest professional decision I made. There is no perfect school district. Every educational organization has flaws and shortcomings. In my experience, both directly and indirectly with other school districts, Beaverton School District ranks at the top. I wish that both my children had attended school in BSD. Though not perfect, the district is always striving to provide opportunities to all students.
My last day is June 30. Kelly Cox will begin July 1 as the new principal of Five Oaks Middle School. I know that you will welcome her. She is very anxious and excited to begin her new adventure. I have told her what a wonderful school this is and she will love the students, families, and staff she will have the good fortune to work alongside.
Thank you everyone.
Shirley Brock

TECHOLOGY UPDATE
Student Passwords in ParentVue
To make it easier for parents to support students, the ParentVue application and mobile app now include the initially assigned student password. This information is available on the Student Info tab. If the initially assigned password has been changed, the parent will see the date of change and instructions to contact the school for assistance in changing the password. Parents can also email shd@beaverton.k12.or.us for help with student technology issues.
Student Chromebooks
Students may continue to keep their District-issued Chromebook during the summer unless they no longer need it or are leaving the District. Families should contact the school if they would like to return the Chromebook.

Please take a few moments to complete the BSD Annual Parent Survey! This year, we would like to know about your experience with remote learning while schools have been closed. Our goal is to ensure that every member of our school community feels welcomed, valued, and informed, so it is important for all parents/guardians to complete the survey.

June 2020 PTO Update
PTO Update-
The Spring Fundraiser is over and we consider it a success! We had a net profit of about $5500. All product and prizes were delivered to the school and have been mostly picked up by now. If you have not picked up your product-please contact the school to make arrangements. Due to the school closure-we are unable to arrange the Superplay incentives so Target gift cards have been mailed to those students selling 10,15 and 20 items. We thank you for participating!
Since we were unable to treat the teachers and staff to lunch, coffee and treats during Teacher Appreciation week as usual-we purchased $500 in gift cards for a gift card raffle. The PTO greatly appreciates all the hard work they do teaching our students-especially now with the increased challenges of distance learning.
The PTO held virtual PTO meetings via Zoom in May and June. Due to the current COVID situation-the current board will remain on until Fall when we plan on holding elections September or October. We approved a draft budget for next year which will get final approval at the first meeting in the fall. We will also be doing the Believe Kids fundraiser again-but in the fall this time to take advantage of the Christmas shopping season!
The PTO really needs parent involvement! If you have suggestions or ideas or just want to know how to be involved please contact the board at pto.fo.rc@gmail.com.
