We then watched a couple of short video clips, narrated by children in China. One lived in Shanghai and the other in Xingping. We then learned about Chinese writing through the book "The Pet Dragon". They observed, before I could even tell them, that some of the characters resembled the object they portrayed. A great example was the character for mountain. Next week, they will write a phrase on rice paper and explore The Great Wall of China.

We then learned about a weather phenomenon called St. Elmo's Fire. In Shakespeare's play, "The Tempest", Ariel causes mayhem and personifies St. Elmos' Fire. Students learned why it is named after St. Elmo, and the true cause. We also got to see images of this rare phenomenon.
We finished the November chapter of Wednesday Wars, then reviewed with a Kahoot! quiz. We ended the day by reading the December chapter, and discussing their homework assignment, which is linked on Google Classroom.
5th Grade
We spent most of our morning celebrating Pi Day. We began with a video read-aloud of the book called "Sir Cumference and the Dragon of Pi". Students learned the history of pi and how it relates to ratios. We spent some time measuring the circumference and diameter of circles, and finding their ratio. Some students got very close to pi. Students also learned that pi is an irrational number. (They asked for all of the links we viewed, so I posted them on Google Classroom.) We ended the celebration by eating cherry pie and lemon meringue pie while learning some history of WWII. We also read a couple of chapters in The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.
