When and How Did Texas Become a State?
Did Everyone Want Texas to Become a State?
Not everyone wanted Texas to become a state. Some Texans wanted to be their own powerful country like the United States, but people like Sam Houston (one of the leaders of Texas) wanted to become a state because the postal service was good and the U.S army protected its citizens. These things cost money, and Texas did not have a lot of money. If they were a state, they would have these things for less money.
How did the the Leaders of Texas Feel?
Some leaders did not want Texas to become a state because of slavery. They knew farmers could use the labor of people who are not free. Certain other states had laws supporting slavery, but some people did not want to add another slave state to the United States.
How Did the people in the U.S Feel?
Some U.S citizens did not want Texas to become a state because Texas had a big debt to pay. After the war with Mexico, Texas owed a lot of money to all the citizens that helped them. U.S citizens felt like they would have to give money to Texas so they can pay off their debt, and they didn't want that to happen.
