October Greetings from Mrs. Price, Lumberton Campus Principal
Dear BCSSSD Community,
Lumberton Campus of Burlington County Special Services is a school comprised of three distinct groups of students: our Core students, who come to us from all over the county and out of county as well; our Gen Ed students from all over the county, and our Capital Academy students, who are in a residential placement and are receiving education at Lumberton Campus. Lumberton Campus offers the traditional core academics: English, Math, History, Science, World Language, PE and Health. We also offer an array of vocational classes: Automotive, Culinary Arts, Business Office, Wood Shop/Landscaping, and Cosmetology. We offer Studio Arts as part of our Fine and Performing Arts program. We have introduced our Core 4 +1 inititative into our vocational classrooms this year, which offers the students opportunities to achieve a skills certificate representing the skills they have learned and can demonstrate with competency.
In addition to our academic program, we are boosting our behavioral program by developing a normative, positive culture. We use a therapeutic approach and consistently stress our norms: focus on learning, be respectful with language, actions, and clothing, and choose not to use cell phones during school hours. As students become competent with the norms, we are looking to develop student leaders who will ultimately model the positive norms and encourage others to do so. Developing leadership skills in students will increase their confidence and push them forward in their education and ultimately in the work force.
We are also working on developing an intramural sports program at Lumberton Campus. We believe in healthy minds and healthy bodies. As we encourage participation in sports and establish team sports, we are emphasizing positive social skills and a healthy life style.
Sincerely,
Eileen Price
Principal, Lumberton Campus

- This year, BCAS science teacher, Cathy Maista, is teaching a STEAM elective. During this elective students have been creating projects with an emphasis on engineering. Students created pipe cleaner towers by building the tallest tower with only 15 pipe cleaners; the tallest measured 82 cm. Next, the students were challenged to create a gummy bear parachute. Students were required to design a parachute that would allow the bear to land safely. The longest drop time was 4.2 seconds! The final project involved the students creating a marshmallow catapult. The idea was to build a simple machine able to launch a marshmallow the farthest distance. One student launched his marshmallow over 5 yards!

Message from Christine Hewitt, BCSSSD EA President
We in the BCSSEA have helped raised funds this month for 2 outstanding organizations.
On the Misty Sunday Morning of Oct 2nd, we walked and passed out BCSSSD PRIDE donations to the crowd at Jake’s Run4play. Our campuses raised $350 for an exciting new Jake's Place Boundless Playground, to be constructed in Delran. Deb Crosby and Pat Niehaus made sure BCSSSD was well represented, volunteered and walked. We did all we could to help make the event successful. This new Jake's Place Playground will enrich our student's lives - right here in Burlington County.
On Friday, Oct 14th, we attended the RVRHS Relay for Life Event. It was organized by RVRHS staff, students and parents. These parents are also proud members of our BCSSEA. Together, Liz Braude, Debbie Jackson and Jackie Moss joined our school communities and provided us with a beautiful and rewarding evening. Our Team consisting of Special Services staff, family members and friends, (as well as additional staff members who donated, knowing they could not be there with us) raised over $900. The weather was perfect, each lap on the track brought us together to raise our awareness of the ACS goals and efforts. We each walked honoring loved ones and celebrating with our family and friends.
Character Education: Kindness with Ms. Hogan's Class
TAKE WHAT YOU NEED
Ms. Hogan’s Graphic Design class created a wall of Kindness in honor of this month’s character education word. Students discussed what the word "kind" meant and different ways that they can show kindness. Students wrote different phrases that were both kind or uplifting on post-it notes. Ms. Hogan’s classes then put all of the post-it notes on a wall with a sign saying “take what you need.” People walking by could take off a post-it note so that they could be uplifted for the day with kindness.Ms. Hogan teaches Graphic Design on our Westampton Campus
