STILLSON BUZZ
March 2023 Newsletter
From the Principal
Dear Stillson Families,
After quite a wild few months of weather, we have finally made it to March! Hopefully, we will start to see some glimpses of spring in the upcoming weeks ahead! As you have likely noticed, on a daily basis, we have quite a bit of ice in the mornings and large puddles in the afternoon on the walkways and playground. Due to this, we ask you to please continue to send your student(s) to school with boots, and maybe an extra pair of socks, to ensure dry feet during learning times for a while longer. As the weather continues to warm up, I want to also remind families that our rule on the playground is that students need long sleeves until the temperature reaches 50 degrees. But, please continue sending coats as the temperatures are often much colder than 50 degrees in the mornings before school and the early morning recesses. Thank you for your help in reminding students to dress for the weather!
On March 7th and 9th, we will hold Parent Teacher Conferences. We look forward to sharing with you the progress made by your child as well as sharing with you how we can work together to support continued learning. Please be sure to ask any questions you may have at your conference. We want to ensure you have the information you need to support your child. If you have not yet signed up for a conference time, please be sure to reach out to the classroom teacher to see what is available.
In the upcoming months, students in grades 3, 4, and 5 will be taking the Forward Exam. We will begin preparing students for the test in the upcoming days. We will officially start testing in April and more information will be sent home as we approach the beginning of our testing. As testing begins, you can help your students be ready by ensuring that they get good sleep, stay hydrated, and eat healthy meals/snacks.
Last but not least, our monthly focus is persistence- learning to keep on going, even when things are tough. Ms. Henderson and I will be visiting classrooms to read The Little Butterfly That Could and school staff will continue to discuss the importance of persistence throughout the month. Staff and teachers will also be filling out various acts of persistence they notice around our school to display in our cafeteria.
As always, thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
Jennifer Sarauer
Stillson Elementary Principal

Why Every Day Matters
Why Every Day Matters: The Importance of School Attendance
Ellen Reilly, Family Support & Resource Coordinator
Chippewa Falls Elementary Schools
School attendance has the second greatest impact on student achievement, followed only by the quality of teacher; the best teacher in the world cannot teach someone who isn't there.
School attendance is the first key to success for your student/s. Having them arrive to school on time and ready to learn is an important routine that can help them build lifelong good habits and lead them on to a happy and productive life!
Research shows:
Students who are frequently absent in Kindergarten tend to gradually increase their absences in subsequent years, and demonstrate lower achievement in reading, math, and general knowledge.
Poor attendance has serious implications for later outcomes as well. High school dropouts have been found to exhibit a history of negative behaviors, including high levels of absenteeism throughout their childhood, at higher rates than high school graduates.
Students who eventually dropped out of high school missed significantly more days of school in first grade than their peers who graduated from high school. In eighth grade, this pattern was even more apparent and, by ninth grade, attendance was shown to be a key indicator significantly correlated with high school graduation.
If you are struggling to get your child/children/student/s to school, please reach out for support. Chippewa Elementary Schools are working together to increase attendance and improve your child's academic and social outcomes! Contact your child's school counselor (listed below) or Ellen Reilly, the Family Support & Resource Coordinator to see how we may be able to help!
