Hello from the Coaching Corner!
~ Building a Love of Reading at Home ~
Children love listening to stories and reading aloud to your child is one of the most beneficial activities you can engage in!
- Reading together helps to create a bond between you and your child.
- It also develops listening and language skills.
- Listening to read alouds also helps to build your child's vocabulary.
- It can teach life lessons and aid in social and emotional development.
If you have limited access to books at home, there are several applications available on their devices such as MyOn and Epic. The students should be familiar with logging into these platforms, but if you are having issues, you can always contact your child's teacher for their login information.
WHY SO MANY NUMERACY TOOLS?
~The Importance of Constructing Models with Numeracy Tools~
When we think about scaffolding lessons and concepts for students, we naturally think of gradual release. C.P.A (Concrete, Pictorial and Abstract) allows students to first ground their understanding in the concrete, often defined as the “doing”. Students tangibly build models to represent concepts and ideas with the use of hands on manipulatives. When students can construct a model with manipulatives and discuss how the model works, they then can begin to shift to working in the pictorial stage of understanding.
The pictorial stage, also known as the “seeing” stage allows students to capture and work through problems on a deeper cognitive level. Students are able to model mathematics in a manner that allows them to explain and record their thinking, to share with others. Students no longer require the “hands on” manipulatives, but understand HOW these manipulatives work to represent them pictorially.
When students begin to become fluent in the pictorial stage, then, they are ready to move into the abstract, also known as the “symbolic” stage. In this stage, students can begin to learn more abstract symbols, strategies and “shortcuts” because they understand how the concepts work in both the concrete and pictorial. More importantly, students can explain the logic behind such short cuts, as the standard algorithms.
Students need to move through all three stages in order to truly understand a concept to the level of depth that the CCSS requires. Teachers will often move back and forth between these stages to reinforce and develop concepts. It is important to provide opportunities for students to first anchor their understanding in the concrete and pictorial stages. This allows students to be global thinkers and to see the big picture of how numeracy concepts and ideas are connected and interrelated.
The Family CharacterDare by Character Strong
The CharacterDare Challenges are ways to bring the sometimes abstract concepts, values, and traits of character to life. We believe that character is a set of skills, and all skills require practice!
