Newport Mill Weekly Update
Sept 30, 2022

Hispanic Heritage Night was a MAJOR SUCCESS!!
Newport Mill was excited to host our inaugural Hispanic Heritage Family night! There were well over 200 people in attendance, including special visitors from our cluster schools, MCPS central office and many of our own Newport Tiger families! This was a great opportunity to celebrate and enhance international mindedness for our entire community. This event allowed us to showcase the Hispanic Culture of the students and families that are a part of our Newport Community.
We can't say thank you enough to the amazing students, families, grandparents etc who helped prepare and serve delicious food from their home country! Mouths were watering with all the homemade goodies like quesadillas salvadorenas, dulce de leche, tres leches baladas, chichamora - and so much more!! The country tables were magnificent!! There were beautiful traditional clothing, flags, posters, and delicious food throughout the room!
We also had 3 dance troops perform including couples dances from Einstein's Titanes Salseros who danced 2 couples dances and then spent time working with willing audience members to learn a few steps of their own! And then, one of our newest staff additions, Ms. Baran-Gonzalez, danced with 2 traditional companies - GRUFOLPAWA and Bailes y Tradiciones Panamenas USA!
This year, we've also welcomed our new Parent Community Coordinator - Ms. Leticia Schoenthal - who was the energy behind hosting the fabulous La Loteria table! Students and families alike were vying for a coveted chair at LaLoteria!! With fun trinkets and prizes for so many - it was certainly an event highlight!!
Newport Mill students came through with over 150 student volunteers to help prepare crafting items for the craft tables, decorating over 18 doors, creating informational posters and country posters, and volunteering at the event! Whether it was cutting 1000s of yards of yarn, gluing hundreds of popsicle sticks, bundling flowers and feathers or cutting out intricate decorations for FABULOUS doors - our kids were the ones who made this whole event and month long celebration possible!
Special thank you as well to our teachers, staff, building services team, Parent Community Coordinator, PTSA and administration who supported the evening with their time, talents, resources and direction! Without their support and encouragement to all of the students - none of this could have happened.
