Rosehill College
From the Principal,
Tēnā koutou katoa,
Covid 19 continues to affect our community and this is being compounded by seasonal colds and flu. Students and staff should stay at home if they are unwell.
Unfortunately, the number of staff absences and the shortage of relievers mean that we cannot provide teachers for all our classes each day, and hence the need to roster year levels home for distance learning to maintain safe staffing levels.
Year 10 students have been rostered home for distance learning today and will be again on Friday 3 June.
Year 9 students will be rostered home for distance learning on Monday 30 May. Monday 6 June is Queen's Birthday and school is closed for all students that day.
Students are to follow their normal timetable and the work will be set on Google Classroom. Students in rostered home year levels who are unable to be supervised at home are to come to school where they will be supervised to follow the same programme as those who are learning from home.
At this point, we are not rostering senior year levels home, but this remains a possibility if our staffing situation continues, in which case we will inform whanau and students as soon as possible. Notifications will by email and also on our website, Facebook page and School App (download here).
Thank you for your understanding, patience and support as we respond to the changes in our circumstances.

Spoken Word Workshop
Our spoken word poets will be performing at the Regional Heats competition for South and East Auckland in the WORD - The Front Line Competition.
These are being held in the Māngere mountain Community Hall on Saturday 27 May from 1pm to 3pm.
WORD - The Front Line is an inter-high school spoken word poetry competition, bringing together teams of young people from across Auckland to share their stories in an explosion of youth expression. It is a poetry slam with the purpose of engaging and growing the potential of our future leaders. It is the only creative battlefield of its kind, equipping young people with poetry prowess and leadership principles for an opportunity to battle for themselves and the challenges that their generation face.
Our rangatahi will appreciate support from friends and whānau.

Procedures for Unwell Students
If your child is sick – PLEASE keep them at home – Only let them come to school if they are 100% well; if in doubt keep them home.
If you receive a text from your child saying they are unwell while at school, please:
- Tell them to go to the nurse first before you come to the school (they will need to ask their Teacher for a note during class time).
- The nurse will assess the student.
- Then she will contact the parent/caregiver if the student needs to go home.
We have systems in place to best manage this and the safety of students can be compromised if they text family instead of following our procedures.
We thank you for your co-operation.
Leaving School During the School Day
Occasionally students will need to leave school during the day to attend medical appointment etc.
It is important that the school is informed of the date, time, expected time of return (if any) and the reason. You can do this by:
- Providing a note for your student to take to their Head of House to obtain an ‘Exit Permit’ before the start of school.
- Emailing attendance@rosehillcollege.school.nz (so long as it is not urgent)
- If urgent, a phone call to the Student Office is the best option
The student will be issued with an Exit Permit, signed by a Head of House, Deputy Principal or authorised person.
The student must sign out at the Student Office before departing school, please ensure when collecting your student that they have completed this task.

The weather played its part this week giving all our teams an opportunity to take to the courts and fields. We know COVID-19 and the winter flu season are still causing issues for some students and families. If you are unable to attend training or a game please communicate this with your coaches as soon as possible.
All sports have now had their charges added to students’ accounts. Thank you to those who have already paid some or all of the fee. We appreciate the support. If you need to arrange a payment plan please contact the cashier directly. These fees cover things such as College Sport entry fees, travel costs, and referee costs among other things. Equestrian
The Rosehill College Equestrian team ( Rosehill Royals ) competed at the North Island Interschools horse trial this weekend in Taupo amidst turbulent weather conditions. The ‘Rosehill Royals’ competed against 42 other schools' teams and had a very successful weekend coming home with the dressage cup for the second year in a row and finishing 2nd overall in the 80cm division. Our team comprises Hanna Luostari with her horse Gabe, Monique Fairhall and her horse Rocky, and Madison Cutfield with her horse Hidden warrior. Unfortunately, our 4th member Hollie Cook couldn't compete as her horse became lame before the event.
Huge congratulations to our teams and our thanks to parents and to our team manager Louise Luostari for their support and mahi this weekend.
Badminton
A Grade
Our A grade players had to dig deep this week. In both doubles pairs, it game down to the final set. Kat and Matt managed to hold off a strong challenge from Strathallan to win the third set 21 14. Sadly Scarlett and her partner went down in a nail biter, losing 20-21 to a strong Alfriston pairing. Scarlett managed to rebound back and win her singles in another three set thriller. Matt Wong has continued to develop his game as he is finding the balance between defence and attack.
B grade
Our B grade side came up against a strong Papatoetoe A side who are regular contenders in this grade. The team was without the experience of Chris Thompson who is recovering from injury. We came out strong in our singles winning all four games without dropping a set. The team continued their form into the doubles winning both games to cement our place on top of the table. Stand out performer was Jeremy Thompson who again led from the front as stand in captain.
