Wow! It looks like we have much to celebrate in this month's edition. Take a look!
- Kingsway Regional High School & the Rothman Institute have officially partnered to provide qualifying seniors in the Sports Medicine Program a unique opportunity to engage in a practicum - Thank you to Mrs. Robin Jaramillo for all her dedication to the program. - Congrats to Mrs. Nancy McCloskey for being named the Spotlight Faculty for April!
- Congratulations to Mr. Robert Rosenheim for being accepted into Harvard's Data Wise Coach Certification Institute. We can't wait to see what you have to share!
- Congrats to Mrs. Stephanie Owens for being featured in SJMagazine as one of SJ's Top Teachers.
- Ms. Colleen Malane was featured in a webinar presentation as ReThink's Educator of the Month!
- Ms. Laura Fiorentino continues to inspire and challenge her creative writing class to have their writing reach audiences beyond the classroom. Emily Malone was awarded Distinguished Honors for the 2016 Letters about Literature Writing Contest. She will be honored at a celebration on Thursday, May 19, 2016, at the Livingston College Student Center.
- Out of 631 schools from around the country, Kingsway placed TENTH in this year's third WordWright Challenge! The students who achieved outstanding individual results are Cheridan Arthur, Samantha Brink, Emily Danilak, Lauren Fitzgerald, Anna Kjellson, Kelly McCool, Marut Raval, and Simran Shinh. Juniors Colleen Highland and Victoria Mbakwe also earned outstanding status. The challenge that students complete requires close reading and analysis with attention to the nuances of language--some of the most critical skills we hope for them to obtain during their time at Kingsway!
- Classroom conversations are used to relieve students' anxieties associated with the test should students display them.
- Lesson planning should continue to reflect G.R.E.A.T. Instruction. What does this mean? Just continue to plan and implement all of the engaging activities and formative assessments that we have seen throughout the year!
- Video clips over 10 minutes long do need approval from your instructional supervisor.
- If you teach seniors (who are not participating in PARCC), instruction and assessments should continue as normal.
KEF mini-grants applications are now are being accepted!
Have an idea for a program that will support the success of our students? Last year the Foundation donated more than $22,000 in awards, bringing the total to close to $60,000 since the program began in 2012. Kingsway Regional High School- Beginning April 12th
Testing will last between 90 and 110 minutes each day. The ELA portion is comprised of 3 units and the mathematics portion is comprised of 3 units.
- ELA (9, 10, 11) and Mathematics (Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II): April 12th – April 22nd
Kingsway Regional Middle School - Beginning April 18th
Testing will last between 80 and 110 minutes each day. The ELA portion is comprised of 3 units and the mathematics portion is comprised of 3 units.
- ELA (7, 8) and Mathematics (7, 8, Algebra I): April 18th – May 10th
*PLEASE NOTE: All make-up testing will occur after the regular administration has concluded.
PARCC Testing Resources:
For your records, we have posted the high school and middle school PARCC Comprehensive Student Roster Schedule, high school and middle school PARCC Faculty Guides, and the 2016 PARCC Test Administrator Training presentation on Callisto (click on PARCC – then PARCC 2016). As testing begins, we believe it is helpful for the entire staff to have access to these resources.

Unpacking the Assessment Literacy Checklist: Alignment
As we delve further into assessment literacy, let's consider some of the intricacies of Alignment, the first element on our assessment checklist. A vital part of determining alignment is unpacking the standards.
Let's take a look at a 9th-10th grade Language Arts/Literacy standard:
Determine a central idea of a text and analyze its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and refined by specific details; provide an objective summary of the text.
We can unpack this standard into five skills:
· Determine a central idea
· Analyze an idea's development
· Determine how an idea emerges
· Identify, assess, evaluate specific details
· Write an objective summary
Unpacking the standards allows you to “call out” or identify all the skills that you will need to teach and measure. It is key to your ability to write or select assessments that are aligned with standards.
PLT Focus for April
- Summer Work Assignments: Begin to discuss and collaborate on developing summer work assignments, if you are choosing to assign them. Consider: What is the purpose of the assignment? (i.e., review, pre-assessing, etc.); how will the assignments count? Middle School--If this work can be completed before May 16, this can greatly help conversations that school counselors will be having with sending districts.
Use of Norms to guide discussions: Continue to infuse your established norms into your PLT discussions
- Preparing for the next CSA: Continue to examine your CSAs in relation to where your students are currently performing and where you expect them to perform at the next CSA. (see Item Analysis section from the December Supervisor's Corner).
- Curricular revisions: As you progress through the year and find units of instruction in need of improvement, please continue to make any needed revisions (in red) to curriculum documents that are located in Callisto.
- Grade Ranges: Reflect on/discuss any recommended adjustments to current grade ranges
Professional Development: Upcoming PLWs
Introducing a PLW Co-Teaching Series presented by Alaeida DeColli and Sumana Stephenson! This PLW series includes three sessions, which kicked-off this past Wednesday, April 6. If you have ever co-taught, currently co-teach, or dream of co-teaching, this is the workshop series for you!

Content-Specific Presenters Needed! If you have an idea for a PLW, please contact Ms. Stefanie Fox-Manno. She would love to learn more about your ideas for a workshop. As a presenter, you receive 3 professional development hours and get paid for the hour that you present.
Please remember to submit reflection forms for Dragon Hours within five days of a workshop. All information related to Dragon Hours, can be found on our webpage by going to For Staff - Professional Development - and Dragon Hours.
Summative Evaluation Meetings
Summative meetings will commence this month! Keep in mind two dates that your evaluator will email you (below).
- One is for when your summative evaluation items are due in iObservation (2 SGOs with corresponding data spreadsheets and your 2016-2017 PDP, 5 days before your scheduled meeting).
- The other date is for your summative evaluation meeting.
- The 2016-2017 PDP template was sent in an email from Ms. Calandro.
- Within the same email, you received directions for how to upload your information into iObservation.
- Information on How to Calculate your SGO, including a webinar, can be found on the data/tech mentor classroom found here.
Also, please remember to bring the following to your summative meeting to facilitate discussion:
- Your 2015-2016 PDP (the PDP for this school year)
- Collected evidence for your SGOs: Minimum of 2 students per tier with a minimum of 2 pieces of evidence for each student to display student growth
- Your summative evaluator will have a total of your PD hours as of March 18, 2016. PLT hours, as well as other additional PD attended, will be displayed on your June 30th PD statement.
NJ DOE Updates Graduation Requirements
The New Jersey State Board of Education has updated the graduation requirements for the classes of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019.
As noted in the chart on our District website (http://www.krsd.org/Page/1080), you can access the updated list of assessments and their respective score points that members of the classes of 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2019 can use to demonstrate that they have met the competency testing requirements needed for a regular high school diploma (including the appropriate threshold scores for the PARCC assessments).
*Please note that some special education students, whose individualized education plans (IEPs) specify an alternative way to demonstrate proficiencies, will continue to follow the graduation requirements set forth in their IEPs.
