Mitchell Blooms Club

Mitchell Blooms was a club that was started by Crystal Vallade and Jennifer Villegas Alvarez with the help of their sponsor, Sarah Jones. The group has grown to a consistent group of ten students. Mitchell Blooms has worked to clear the east courtyard of old plants and shrubs. The group has been working with Colorado College and most recently Concrete Couch. We are very excited to partner with Concrete Couch to create a fun, usable space for the students at Mitchell. Crystal, the club president, recently said the purpose of the club was, " to give the kids in school a sense of community, to create a purpose for kids to come to school." Jennifer said, " I would like the school to be a more comfortable place to be and to make it look prettier, so students know it is worth coming to Mitchell."

Mitchell Blooms spends a large amount of time in the courtyard space and the rest of the time they meet they are planning fund raising events, contacting members of the community for help, and other administrative duties. We are excited for you to see what we have coming for the courtyard space. We are confident that the students of Mitchell will be very thrilled with what is coming!

Marcus Myles

Marcus Myles (Class of 2022) - Marcus's approach to being a Marauder truly embodies our ACCEPT Core Values. When his social studies teacher was recently out ill for several days, Marcus took it upon himself to design and present a high-quality, thoughtful lesson related to key concepts the class had been studying in Constitutional & Criminal Law. He showed both caring and courage in this action. Marcus also participated in and was the 12th grade winner of the Veteran's Day essay contest, truly embodying the value of excellence. Finally, Marcus is hard at work learning the computer programming language Python, yet another example of high achievement and persistence. Way to go, Marcus!

Meet our Assistant Principal

Amanda Wermers

Hello Mitchell Marauders Community!

It is with great excitement and pleasure that I introduce myself as the Assistant Principal of Discipline serving the Mitchell Community. I was raised in Vermont, graduating with my Bachelors degree from the University of Vermont in 2003. I moved to Colorado in 2003 when I began my career in education as a high school health and pe teacher. I earned my Masters degree in Educational Leadership in 2017 from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs. I am entering my 13th year of education where I have had a variety of roles as a health and pe teacher, IB Coordinator, Assistant Principal and Interim Principal.

I believe in giving students opportunities to reach their maximum potential. I am committed to serving and supporting every student and family of Mitchell to ensure everyone has the very best educational and extracurricular experiences by providing pathways to success. By being transparent and partnering with all of our stakeholders, I feel we can work together to provide the best for our current and future students and collectively achieve greatness. Together we will be able to generate excellence and celebrate our successes. Thank you for the privilege to serve as your assistant principal. Together, We are Mitchell!

State Review Panel (SRP) Visit

WHEN: The SRP visit took place on September 28th and 29th

WHAT: The State Review Panel (SRP) was created by the Education Accountability Act of 2009 (“Accountability Act”) to provide acritical evaluation of the State’s lowest-performing schools' and districts’ plans for dramatic action and provide recommendations to the Commissioner and the State Board of Education. The SRP’s work is informed by a holistic review of the school or district, including guiding documents (e.g., Unified Improvement Plan) and a site visit.

WHY: The purpose of an SRP review is to gather on-site evidence on a school’s program and operations in the areas outlined in the Accountability Act. The site visit builds on the document review process conducted by the SRP in preparation for a deeper analysis while on site. The site visit allows the SRP to interact with the school or district to determine capacity and solicit school staff and district input. For progress monitoring reviews, it also allows the Panel to assess implementation of the actions the school was previously directed to take. However, it is just one source of evidence that the SRP considers to better understand where improvement efforts are successful or lagging. The 2-day SRP visit will provide panelists with a current snapshot of turnaround efforts here at Mitchell High School.

HOW: The SRP review is based on the criteria outlined in the Accountability Act. This includes determining whether:

✓ Leadership is adequate to implement change;

✓ Infrastructure is adequate to support school improvement;

✓ There is readiness and capacity of district, institute, or school’s personnel to plan effectively and lead appropriate actions;

✓ There is readiness and capacity to engage productively with the assistance provided by an external partner;

✓ There is a likelihood of positive returns on State investments of assistance and support to improve the performance in the current management and staffing; and

✓ It is necessary that the district, institute, or school remain in operation. Access the MHS Staff Drive for detailed information about School Review Protocol.

WHO: Visiting panelists work with school administration and staff as collaborative partners. - Classroom observations will be conducted. A series of interviews and/or focus groups will be conducted to gather information about the school.

RESULT: - "Innovation school" means a school in which a local school board implements an innovation plan pursuant to section 22-32.5-104.

- Begin work on refinement of the MHS Innovation Plan

We Are Proud To Share The State Review Panel (SRP) - Unofficial Feedback

The SRP recommends innovation school status because the school and District have demonstrated leadership and personnel capacity as evidenced by the District’s decision to reconstitute the school and instate new school leadership. The SRP observed several early indicators of change, including staff confidence and support of new leadership and staff commitment to non-negotiables as defined by leadership.

Thank You to the The Daughter’s of the American Revolution!

When Mitchel High School opened its doors for the 21-22 school year, the Severe Needs Classroom found all its classroom materials missing. The cupboards in our life skills kitchen were bare until a generous Colorado Springs non-profit came to help. The Daughter’s of the American Revolution chose to donate $250.00 for our need to stock food to cook. In addition, the kind group of ladies collected enough cooking and cleaning tools to create a kitchen Rachael Ray would envy. We want to thank D.A.R. for helping our students learn to cook and clean.
