Reinvestment in Climate and Culture
Elementary leaders continue to meet and share best practices, analyze data and support continued improvement in our schools. Our focus this year is to be able to calibrate PBIS practices district wide in order to be consistent but at the same time individualize supports to meet the need of each building. PAX training is being utilized in many of our buildings. If you want to learn more about PBIS and/or PAX contact Sarah Keller at Kellers@hsd.k12.or.us or see your PBIS building leader.
Climate and Culture in Secondary:
In collaboration with the secondary anti-bullying team, the climate and culture committee is strengthening awareness in social media education in our middle and high schools. In alignment with the district efforts to know every student by name, strength and need, secondary's climate and culture is working on a video project of having students know their teachers by the same characteristics. Finally a group of community volunteers have been put together to support our secondary schools with tutoring and mentoring. The volunteers have selected to be math tutors and to help in our local high schools with activities such as FAFSA workshops.

Mixing in Math
Math has been a subject with which many students struggle. We have all heard a student utter the words, "I'm never going to use this stuff!" as they struggle with a math problem. Instead of responding to the student by saying that they may need it in the future or that it will improve critical thinking abilities of the brain, you can show them how these practical applications of math serve in their every day life. You may do this by pointing out the mathematical skills needed in science, literacy, social studies, physical education and music. When students are able to transfer what they've learned from one context to another, they are deepening their understanding of that skill. DOK 3 and 4 in action!
