YES, THERE WAS A SOUTH FLORENCE
South Florence, earlier known as South Port, was an incorporated town which, until Tuscumbia Landing came into being, was the only steamboat passenger port for eastern points south of the Tennessee River. By the 1820’s, there were warehouses for various types of merchandise located there. Its fortunes waxed and waned until the Civil War and for a while afterward. In 1889, it was platted and recorded in the Colbert County Courthouse, and it appears on county maps as late as 1907. Roughly speaking, South Florence was located on the southern bank of the Old Railroad Bridge and extended through the area known today as the TVA Reservation. Maps showing the actual layout of the town still exist. The late Alfred McCroskey, a well-respected local historian (he prepared and submitted the paperwork in 1976 for Florence’s first historic district, the Sannoner District on upper North Court and North Pine Streets), lived in South Florence as a child. He remembered walking daily during the school year with his young friends across the Old Railroad Bridge to Patton Elementary School on East College Street in downtown Florence.

"The Official United State Civil Rights Trail: What Happened Here Changed the World"
Alabama State Tourism Director Lee Sentell will present his book, "The Official United State Civil Rights Trail: What Happened Here Changed the World" beginning at 6 p.m. Monday, Nov. 15, in the library's fiction colonnade. Sentell will talk about his book and will be available to sign copies. His book spans the fight for American civil rights - a fight that continued for more than two decades in several states. The book also takes a journey through school integration, protest marches, freedom rides and sit-ins, as well as explores historic sites from Topeka, Kansas, to Memphis, Tennessee, from Atlanta, Georgia, to Selma and Birmingham, Alabama. Sentell launched the Alabama Civil Rights Trail, the first in the country, in 2004. After tasking a major university to inventory civil rights landmarks open to the public, he founded the U.S. Civil Rights Trail with his fellow Southern state tourism directors. The trail features more than 120 landmarks in 15 states and Washington, D.C.
