Sharri Duncan of John W. Moore Intermediate Named the 2018 Florence 1 Schools Teacher of the Year
John W. Moore Intermediate School Art Instructor Sharri Duncan has been selected Florence 1 Schools 2018-19 Teacher of the Year. Duncan was selected from some 20 applicants in Florence 1 Schools. Florence 1 School Superintendent Dr. Richard O’Malley made the announcement on Tuesday evening at the 17th Annual School Foundation Gala.
Prior to the culminating announcement, the teacher of the year selection panel reviewed all school teacher of the year applications, and the four teachers whose applications received the highest scores emerged as Honor Roll Teachers. They are Sharri Duncan, Lynn Perkins of Southside Middle; Kim Cimney of West Florence High and Lenora Rivers-Davis of Wilson High, all underwent classroom observations and interviews conducted by an external, three-member selection panel with Duncan emerging as the Florence One Teacher of the Year.
Duncan will represent Florence 1 Schools in this year’s South Carolina Teacher of the Year Program. Learn more about Sharri Duncan by viewing the video.
SchooLinks is now in Florence 1 Schools
With SchooLinks, students are able to explore their interests, find what colleges and careers are the best fit for them and plan for graduation and beyond. This program is available for 9th-12th grade students in all Florence 1 High Schools and their parents. All of the SchooLinks features are designed to be user-friendly and engaging, helping students prepare for college, career and life in a way that feels relevant to them. Using virtual reality, students can even take a tour of over 500 colleges and universities without leaving home.
Florence 1 Schools is the first in the State of South Carolina to implement SchooLinks.

Through SchooLinks, South Florence High School students Gracelyn Flowers, (far left) and Andrew Evans (far right) took a virtual tour of Harvard University and Yale University during lunch this week. They are joined by SchooLinks Special Projects Coordinator Sarah Welbes (second from left) and Community Manager Kaly Nasiff (second from right). Both Welbes and Nasiff will return to Florence in mid-November to provide more information about SchooLinks for parents and students.
Performing Arts Students to Benefit from $3 Million Investment
Dr. Richard O’Malley announced plans to invest over $3 million toward programs for the arts over the next year. The investment will include the following: • Updates and renovations for each high school auditorium ($1.3 million); • New instruments for middle and high school students ($450,000); • Supplies and furniture: easels, tables, chairs, supplies ($450,000); • Human resources: 10 new teachers ($400,000); • Curriculum & Programs: Graphic arts, additional Advanced Placement, Art History, Music Theory, Studio Art Design, 2D & 3D; and, • Additional Support: State of the art technology, smart music, regional and national competitions, an increase in supplements.

Anxiety 101
There will be a workshop for parents, titled Anxiety 101 at Williams Middle School on Tuesday, October 30 from 6:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. The Anxiety 101 Workshop will be presented by Williams Middle School Behavioral Counselor Sam Fryer. The workshop will offer tips and techniques for parents who are dealing with their children's anxiety issues. For more information call 843-673-8162.
