Principal's Message
We had a wonderful and very busy October at Chris Yung! Students started the month off with Walk to School Day, enjoyed Movie Night, field trips, STEAM Night, Book Fair Week, Field Day, BINGO Night, and had a wonderful Character Count Week/ Red Ribbon Week. We expect November to be just as busy as it is a short month due to the school closings and holidays. We’ll make every day that school is open count toward ensuring that students are engaged in rigorous learning opportunities that will challenge their thinking and develop skills needed to master grade level content.
Parent Teacher Conferences will take place on Tuesday, November 6. You can expect to hear about your child’s specific learning progress and how well your child is meeting grade level objectives. You will also have an opportunity to ask questions about your child and the curriculum. Conferences are scheduled for 15 minutes and teachers have many back to back conferences so please be on time. If you have questions about conferences, contact your child’s teacher or call the school at 571.598.3500. First quarter report cards will be sent home on November 14.
As parents, you make Chris Yung a beautiful place to work and learn through your volunteerism, your donations for students and staff, and taking on leadership roles in areas such as PTO and Advisory Council. There is a Japanese proverb that states, “Vision without action is a daydream.” Accolades to our awesome community members who routinely and passionately act to help us more closely implement our vision of making Chris Yung a World Class school that is committed to excellence.
There are many exciting activities coming up this month so make sure to check out the upcoming events. I wish you and yours a beautiful fall season and a November filled with lots of good books, warm fires and unforgettable memories with family and friends.

The Library Staff would like to thank all our Chris Yung Families that helped to support our fall Book Fair. We had one of our most successful Book Fairs to date! Because

Mrs. Masterson and Mrs. Davila would also like to thank Mrs. Aislyn Epperson, Mrs. Teresa Booker, and Mrs. Claudia Romano for volunteering time to help with Book Fair. We could not have done it without you; please know that your help is appreciated.
Mark your calendars now for our Spring Book Fair…..March 25-29, 2019.

Help Wanted!
We are in need of volunteers in the STEAM closet to help with organization of materials, lesson prep and other areas. This will allow classes throughout the building to access the STEAM closet and use materials for a variety of build challenges. If you have any time available please consider filling out this form and Mrs. Chidester will be in touch! In addition, we are always in need of donations! They can be dropped off outside the STEAM Lab. You can find the list of materials here!

Keep your kids safe and healthy. Get involved with your kid’s activities at home and at school to ensure they are safe and healthy.
Take steps to prevent the flu. The best way to protect against the flu virus is to get vaccinated each year in the fall. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Wash your hands often. Stay home when you are sick.
Test and replace batteries. Check or replace carbon monoxide batteries twice a year when you change the time on your clocks each spring and fall. Replace smoke alarm batteries once a year. Test alarms every month to ensure that they work.
Keep food safe. Clean hands and surfaces often. Separate foods to avoid cross-contamination. Cook to proper temperatures and chill promptly.

What's Happening in STEAM?
In grade K-2 we spent part of October focusing on how we are all unique, with a variety of interests. We used this to add stars to the star display. All grade levels have now had time to complete their stars. Come check out the bulletin board upstairs where you can see all the Chris Yung mindset stars. For grade 2, students spent two weeks in the lab working on completing their coding hours as they continue learning about computer science. All classes have been challenged to complete 600 minutes. Kindergarten and grade 1 began working on completing build challenges with a partner. We discussed how to be a “Lego buddy” that works well with a partner versus a “Gummy buddy” who gets stuck and is not able to solve problems. We worked on this while completing our 5 Little Pumpkins build challenge using paper rolls and Keva Planks to hold up 5 pumpkins.
In grades 3-5 students continued to work on the skills of an effective communicator. We spent time completing back to back drawings where we had to focus on speaking clearly and listening to others. In groups we worked to complete a top secret Keva plank build that involved asking and answering questions to replicate the structure that was hidden. We concluded our focus on communication for the month of October by attempting a cup lift challenge and a compliment circle. Moving forward students in grade 5 have begun designing their combo-creatures that combine two animals with a unique adaptation. They will be designing and then building their creatures in small groups. Students in grades 3 and 4 are diving into their first engineering challenge of the year as they build a stand to sell a pumpkin. The stand will be built in groups using notecards, popsicle sticks, notecards and no more than a foot of tape.

Character Counts Week
Last week, we had fun celebrating Character Counts Week with several themed spirit days. Each day we highlighted a different character pillar. We ended the week with a grade level spirit event with each grade wearing a different color to represent one of the six character pillars.
We also celebrated Red Ribbon Week. The theme for Red Ribbon Week was “Life Is Your Journey. Travel Drug Free”. Students in grades 1-5 had the opportunity to sign the Red Ribbon, drug-free pledge. After signing, students received a red ribbon to wear on their clothing which showed their commitment to traveling drug free and living a healthy lifestyle.
October was a fabulous month for us at Chris Yung. We are proud of our steam engines for showing our commitment to good character and living a healthy, drug-free life
