Nebraska 4-H Flood Recovery Efforts
From Nebraska 4-H...
The widespread flooding and winter weather across our great state has been at the top of all of our minds, including those of 4-H youth, volunteers, staff, and alumni across Nebraska and the country. Thanks to all of you for what you’re doing.
There will be a long road to recovery, and many 4-H’ers and our supporters will want to contribute.
As you assist young people with considering what can be done to support recovery efforts, please share the following:
- Money is the most useful donation. Donations for relief efforts may be given through many support relief organizations, local entities or through the Nebraska 4-H Foundation. Questions regarding donations to the Nebraska 4-H Foundation and financial support to assist these efforts can be directed toward Stuart Shepherd (sshepherd3@unl.edu).
- Volunteer for a relief organization. Some of you are already utilizing the capacity of 4-H clubs as volunteers; if doing so, please think prudently about youth safety. Support relief organizations, such as the Red Cross, Salvation Army, or others, who are already established and assisting in the affected communities may offer opportunities for volunteering.
- Visit http://4h.unl.edu/flood. Additional information and resources are available and will continue to be added on this page.

Market Beef Deadline Changes!
Due to the widespread flooding and challenging winter weather across the state, the State Fair Market Beef nomination deadline has been extended to June 15 to coincide with all other species. This deadline will be for all 4-H and FFA State Fair animals.
We hope this change will help support many of our families whose decisions may be in flux during the recovery. All tagging and DNA requirements will remain as the same. If you have any questions at all, do not hesitate to ask.
Our hearts go out to those affected by the last week. We are hopeful that state fair livestock shows can provide an opportunity for normalcy and hope for our families.
SO WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR YOU?
All Livestock Project deadlines (except horse) are:
- June 14 - ID Sheets
- June 15 - 4-HOnline Enrollment, Show Entry, YQCA Certification, DNA Envelopes

4-H Swine Project: Lottery Pig Program
The Nebraska Pork Producers Association (NPPA) has selected the Douglas-Sarpy 4-H program to pilot a new Lottery Pig Program to increase the enrollment and education of 4-H swine exhibitors. NPPA will be responsible for obtaining 80-100 pound pigs, distribute them by having members draw numbers to obtain a pig in mid-April, provide educational sessions on health, nutrition, exhibiting, careers, pork cooking and other topics and provide awards for the participants.
Youth would pay a $100-125 deposit to participate in the program and obtain a pig. Financial scholarships may be given to families with multiple youth or based on need.
We will try to locate facilities to house pigs for those youth not having facilities. Let Monte Stauffer know if you are willing to house pigs for others or if know of other youth that may want to participate in this program. Families are responsible for feeding, caring for, exhibiting, and marketing the pigs.
Contact Monte Stauffer if you are interested or have any questions at 402-444-4092.

State Fair Horse Opportunity!
The State Fair is looking for 4-H clubs to help with cleaning out horse stalls between the various horse events throughout the state fair. The club would be provided fundraising and free entry to enjoy the fair when they are done cleaning. These groups would not be using machinery, they would put the wood chip bedding into the aisle and the State Fair staff would remove it from there. It would/could be flexible time to fit their schedules - evenings, after school, etc. so the students wouldn’t have to miss school.
If your club is interested in this opportunity for fundraising please contact Chad Jindra at 402-366-6778 or by email at chadjindra@yahoo.com
