Key Communicators Update
July 2018
Hello KCs!
There's a lot going on with our MCSS KCs this summer! Some of you are enjoying wonderful vacations and some are having fun at informative conferences and events. It's great seeing the photos from all of the summer adventures.
In this update, please find the great news about our Smore site license. This is even better news for those who have been paying the bill yourselves! Information about transitioning accounts to the site license is listed below.
I'll be offering a couple of Smore sessions in July and August for anyone wanting to learn more about creating school newsletters and flyers. Dates to be announced.
Enjoy the rest of your summer and I'll see you soon!

Every School Gets A Paid Smore Account!
Smore Site License
We would like for each school to have an account to use for publishing a school newsletter and other important communications.
If your school doesn't already have an account, please talk with your principal about creating one. We can then add it to the site license. Profile name should be school name and email address must be a school email address.
If your school has a Smore account, we can transition it to the site license by doing these things:
- Make sure the email address for the newsletter is a school email address.
- Make the profile name of the newsletter your school's name (ex: New Hope High School or Endeavor Elementary School).
- Complete this form so that I can send an invitation to the school email address to add you to the license.
- Accept the emailed invitation from Smore.
Please let me know if you have questions!

#HashtagIt- Do you have your Hashtag yet?
How to create a Hashtag:
- Be Unique! Don't use a general term that a lot of others use.
- Be positive, think school spirit (ex: #EaglesSoar)
- Keep It Short!
- Build a Community - this hashtag will help brand your school!
- Use school name or initials!
- Use Upper Case letters for easier reading.
- Use it ALL THE TIME!
Some Hashtags from around MCSS:
- Madison County CNP and Lunchrooms- #EatWellMCSS
- Sparkman High School- #WeAreSparkman
- Sparkman Family- #1Sparkman

Our Brand is Our People! ~Matt Massey
A great way to build your brand is to post photos and bios of the new employees at your school!
Building Your Brand on Social Media(some info from article by Ann Smarty)
What is your goal?
- Tell Your Story.
- Build Stakeholder Confidence in Your School.
- Celebrate Successes and Achievements.
- Reflect your message in your logos, your imagery, your tone, and your voice. People should recognize your brand in these things.
Use Tools for Increased Productivity
- Hootsuite or Tweetdeck for scheduling posts and posting across multiple social media platforms.
- Design programs(Canva, Adobe Spark) to create graphics and photo collages
- Video programs like Quik.
- Monitor analytics weekly to determine when to post, what types of posts are most engaging, etc.
Make Your Posts Count
- Create engagement, don't just post links and information.
- Interact with your viewers by responding to comments and asking questions
- Use polls and surveys.
- Invite viewers to share in the comments section of your posts.
- What are people sharing? Visual content (74%) either live or recorded, blogs, podcasts.
Be Consistent with Your Efforts
- Post everyday, consistently.
- Post multiple times daily.
- Don't skip days of posting, use scheduling programs.
- Baseline suggestions: Twitter- 3 times/daily 9am-7pm; Facebook- 2 times/daily 9am- 7pm; Instagram- 1-2 times/daily 9am-7 pm.
Use Multiple Media Platforms and Formats
- Choose your platform based on who you want to target. Parents? Facebook is best. Students? Twitter and Instagram.
- Don't overextend your resources and burn out! Don't try to optimize more than 2 SM platforms!
- As for formats: Share text posts, live or pre-recorded videos of events and students at your school, photos, infographics, and podcasts to catch a wider audience.
Use Your Hashtag(s)
- Use your school's hashtag(s), your school family hashtag, and the MCSS hashtag.
- Create unique hashtags that are descriptive of your message or goal (ex: HawksSoar).
Turn Off Auto Linking!
- Posts from Facebook auto-posted to Twitter will show only a link to the FB post. Followers will not engage with those posts because they expect some kind of context with links.
- Manually share links with a teaser about the link, a quote, or another attention getter to improve click rate.
2018-19 Opt Out Form
Questions from Spring Key Communicator PD meetings
- Ms. Stovall is working on an INOW button for Opt Out Students. I will keep you updated on progress.
What can we do about employees who post information about school security situations or other sensitive situations to their own personal social media?
- This would have to be addressed on a case by case basis, but Mr. Kubik says that there are policies that do address these kinds of situations. If you encounter such a situation, please contact your principal who can then contact Dr. Minskey and Mr. Kubik.
