The Siple Scoop
December 2019
A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL
I want to thank you for your very generous support of the Cool to Care food drive. Our little school exceeded our building goal for the number of items to donate to Outreach East. I am sure our contribution will be greatly appreciated. For their generous efforts the children will be celebrating on Friday, December 6th with a school-wide Pajama Day!
As we move toward our highly anticipated winter break (Please note it is two weeks this year.) and the holidays we are working diligently to encourage the children to stay focused on their learning and good behavior while still enjoying the fun events of the season. This can be tricky for some students. I appreciate your help and partnership with this effort. Sleep is one of the best ways to help your child have a successful day at school. Please help your child get a good night's sleep by establishing or continuing to follow a regular bedtime.
We have noticed over the years that during this season some students become a little lax about completing schoolwork or turning in homework. We are working hard to make sure our Siple STARs continue to grow academically during the holidays by maintaining high expectations for their work. You can partner with us on this effort by continuing to check your child's backpack and/or agenda book every day after school. Please provide time and support to assist them with completing any work that was sent home. We do not send much homework. If a student is bring home work it is often because they did not complete it during the time they were given in class. My teachers work hard to schedule plenty of time during the school day to finish work, so a positive discussion about maximizing their work time would be helpful. My teachers will also provide positive support and together we'll help our students thrive through the holidays!
Let me close by taking a moment to wish all of you a wonderful holiday season! It is such a pleasure to work with your children and you. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!
Happy Holidays!

Holidays
Happy Winter Everyone! The cold weather came early this year but so have the amazing stories of kindness. Davison truly is an incredible district! In last year’s December Siple Scoop I wrote a little perspective about the holidays and I wanted to revisit the topic this year.
The holidays can be a wonderful time of joy for many people. Gathering with family and friends is always a special tradition. Gift giving and random acts of kindness are often thought of during this season and so it is given the title, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”
While the holidays can be all of this, they can also be a very challenging time for some, especially if it’s a first holiday after a loss or separation. In addition, the travel can cause stress for those who like the rhythm of their daily schedule. Lastly, introverted individuals struggle with large crowds of family. With this in mind, please be watching for changes in your children this time of year and feel free to reach out to me as your school counselor for assistance if you want some help. That’s what I love to do.
Lastly, this time of year can be very challenging in the finances area. Two amazing resources I want you to be aware of are Outreach East and 211. Outreach East is a local outreach in Davison that can help with many areas of need. The other resource, 211, is a direct phone number you may call anytime which also helps with those needing some assistance.
Happy Holiday and enjoy the precious family you are blessed with this season!

FUN TO BE FIT
I can't believe it's almost Christmas! Wow time is flying by fast. This month we are working on our hockey unit. The students are learning how to hold on to the stick the right way, striking and moving with an object and some key hockey terms like puck and goalie. My 3rd and 4th graders will also be playing a hockey tournament during this unit. They will come up with their own team name and team color that they will wear on gym days. I also encourage my students to create and make their own shirts if they like (this is not required). Many of my past students have made their own jersey by taking an old shirt and drawing/writing on it. We do talk about not doing this until they get the OK from a parent before they write or draw on any clothes. I have seen some awesome jerseys that the students have made over the years. I do ask them to try to wear their team color on the days that they have gym. I am trying to teach team-building concepts so they understand what it feels like to be part of a team. If you look like a team, then you are going to feel like a team is what I tell my students.
Have a great Christmas Break!
