Spotlight on the Arts

On Monday evening, all first graders are to report their classrooms at 6:30pm for the Spotlight on the Arts program. For those of you who are new to Gayman, Spotlight on the Arts is an annual program conducted by our music teacher, Mrs. Volpe, and our art teacher, Mrs. Alderfer. Mrs. Alderfer is out on maternity leave, so Miss Bertman will be helping first grade this year. You are welcome to arrive a few minutes early to walk our hallways and check out the beautiful artwork. The back hallway by the gym has a lot of first grade work. Please have your child in our classroom promptly at 6:30pm as the show starts at 6:45pm.

Strut Your Mutt

Come see our classroom therapy dog, Gus, at the Roxy Reading Strut Your Mutt Charity Dog Walk this Saturday. Dress your dog in a Kentucky Derby-worthy hat and join Gus at Fanny Chapman Park and parade to Puck Restaurant. Check in at 9am, walk at 10am, or parade at 11am.

This week we read Enzo the Wonderfish by Cathy Wilcox. We focused on the following skills:

  • base words and word endings
  • comprehension
  • appropriate pacing when reading

Shh! It's a secret, but we're writing poetry for our moms. We've been writing, writing, writing and can't wait, wait, wait to share our hard work with you. This week we wrote more poetry and we plan to publish our books next week. Remember, it's a secret!

We began unit 9 learning about:

  • tens and ones patterns on the number grid
  • adding and subtracting tens on the number grid
  • number grid puzzles
  • reviewed frames and arrows, function machines, and name collection boxes

We concluded our study of different groups of animals and we are ready for the zoo. This week we learned the characteristics of insects and arachnids. Ms. Vass also came into our classroom during science time to discuss a problem solving program for first graders called Talk It Out.

All of Gayman's first graders will put on a play called Rumpus in the Rainforest at 9:30am on June 13th for parents and family members. We are in the beginning stages of our practices and can't wait to pick our parts. Watch for more exciting news about this show!
