Principal's Corner
Hello Blue Jays! I hope this week’s weekly e-news finds all our families healthy and safe. We will continue to try and send our weekly e-news emails. We will send additional emails as needed with updates. Please continue to follow KISD district emails and the KISD website for updated district information.
Remember that week one is a time to just get our feet wet with online learning. The teachers are working hard to communicate with parent in order to connect with your child. We are taking this slow to ensure all students are able to get access to the activities and settle into a routine of doing school from home. We were able to pass out over 350 technology devices to students in two days this week.
We want to make this as stress free as possible for all. Know that there has been a lot of behind-the scenes work at the district level to help get this set up. Teachers have also been working hard to get ready for connecting online with students. We appreciate the work and efforts of all. We also appreciate all our parents out there who are now wearing the teacher hat. We know this is a new experience for many of you. We are here to help and support you along this journey. Remember to breathe and take one step at a time.
The teachers are available from 8-4 daily Monday-Friday. If you have not communicated with your child’s homeroom teacher yet, please call 281-237-5350 and leave a message with your name, phone number, child’s name, and the homeroom teacher name. We will get this information to the homeroom teacher within 24 hours Monday-Friday. Our front office staff members are working remotely and listening to the messages daily.
Below is an outline for the first few weeks of online learning:
Week 1: Students will reconnect with learning and their teachers. This is being done during the first part of the week primarily through Dojo. Students are accessing learning opportunities through District Choice Boards during the week. (See attached letter that was sent by the district last Friday if you need more info or you need a technology device). Teachers have started setting up Zoom class meetings this week. It is a great way for your child to catch up with their classmates and teacher.
Week 2: Students will continue District Choice Boards. Teachers will continue to check in with students. Your child will have another Zoom class meeting with their homeroom teacher.
Week 3: Students will begin to have assigned lessons from their teacher that include mini-lessons and assignments prepared by our teachers. Virtual meetings and pre-recorded lessons will be available to students. These lessons are still under construction, but we anticipate there will be a combination of screen activities and non-screen activities. At this time, we are not sure what grading will look like. We do know that we will start taking grades in the future. As we move into the next few weeks, we will give you more information on the way that this will look for our students. So, it is critical that we connect with every student at Golbow.
This is definitely a new journey for all of us. Thank you for all your support. We would love to see the faces of our students as they learn from home. Post pictures to Twitter and use the hashtag @golbowtweets. Also, on Facebook please tag Golbow Elementary. We really want to see your students!
We want to make sure you are aware of and use the Social/Emotional resources available on the katyisd.org website. This is a stressful time for children and adults. Link below: http://katyisd.org/Documents/Student_Support_Services-Wk_1.pdf There are also resources and links on KISD website www.katyisd.org
We miss all of our Golbow students and families! Please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher if you need assistance with online learning. Together we are stronger and we are here to work right alongside you as we get through this together.
If you would like to still check out a device to use at home, please see the attached information in this eNews.
Hugs!!
Ann Lalime, Ed.D.

Elementary Student Online Teaching and Learning
Katy ISD Elementary Parents and Guardians-
During the time period for which we are not offering face to face instruction, Katy ISD will initiate an online learning platform beginning on Monday, March 23, 2020. The week one goal is for our teachers and students to reconnect and reengage with learning activities, lessons, and resources. As online learning continues, teachers will provide lessons aligned with the current school year scope and sequence. Additional information regarding grading and attendance will be forthcoming.
Each week lessons will be provided for Reading, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music and Physical Education. Some lessons will be self-directed, while others will be supported by your child’s classroom teacher who will be accessible Monday through Friday, during specific timeframes that they will communicate directly to their parents next week.
The Pre-K through 5th grade lessons and assignments are organized in the Elementary Curriculum & Instruction Online Learning Platform. Students should select their grade level and the lesson of their choice. Please encourage your child to work on the various lessons throughout the week. The lessons are available in English and Spanish. Resources are available for English Learners, Gifted & Talented, Challenge students, and students with Dyslexia.
The lessons can be accessed here or through a link titled “Elementary Online Learning,” on the Katy ISD website under the Parent tab or in the Parent’s tab, under Curriculum.
Parents of students who are served by specialized special education programs (e.g., ECSE, Life Skills, CAP, ASIP, AB, TIP, and Deaf Education) will be contacted by your child’s teacher/case manager regarding individualized resources and supports. Special education students who receive their instruction in a general education setting with accommodations and in-class support should follow the general education model. Additional information will be forthcoming from case managers.
This first week of online learning is a time for families and teachers to become acquainted with this new way of learning. If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher(s).
Parents and guardians can find digital resources and support here.
Technology
For the past week, Katy ISD's Technology Department has been responding to, and fulfilling requests for, student mobile devices. These devices have been distributed at the home campus of the student. However, due to the counties' "Stay Home" orders, we have modified the days, times and locations for student technology pickup.
As of 5:00 pm this evening, student devices will no longer be distributed at campuses. Distribution of student technology devices that have been requested and assigned, will be relocated to the Katy ISD Education Support Complex (ESC) located at 6301 S. Stadium Lane effective Friday, March 27 at the scheduled time provided to you when you made your initial request for a device. If you have not received a scheduled time for pickup of your student's device, the Technology Department will provide that information to you before Friday. If you are unable to make your scheduled time for pickup, please fill out a new request, as devices are prepared by individual requests. Finally, devices will continue to be distributed in a 'grab n' go' format. Parents will not need to leave their vehicles when picking up devices at the ESC.
Should your student be in need of a device in order to complete online learning assignments at home, please contact the Technology Department using the Campus Device Check Out Form.
If you have any technology related questions, do not hesitate to contact the Parent and Student Technology Support Center.
Technology
