The Great Migration
Between 1815 and 1850 there have more than 800,000 immigrants began to arrive in British North America that from England , Scotland , Ireland and wales.This period , called the Great Migration.
What makes the Great Migration ?
Economic
People left their own for economic reasons because many people had lost their jobs , as machines replaced their jobs.
Unemployment
People lost their farm because the large landowners bought up their small farms so they have no ways to make a living.
Famine
Famine in Ireland show that people had no food to eat and forcing many people to leave the country in search for food.
Opportunity in the Colonies
The colonies give people the places to live and to start life over again. It reduces the economic problems in Britain.
What effects does the Great Migration have ?
More Farms
The colonists cut the trees and clear the land , to create more farms in upper Canada.
More British People
The migration brings a lot of people from the British isles to North America. The number of British population in North America grow quickly from 1820-1850.
Why The Great Migration is the most Historical Significance event?
It brings a lot of British people (over 800,000) to upper Canada and creates many colonies as a result, making it possible to install the confederation. The migrations create problems and challenges of different people living together between the native people and the new comers. So the situation naturally ask for a political solution.
