HIV is a disease that weakens the immune system

AIDS is also a disease but you get this infection when your CD4 cells drop below 200

Amount of HIV and AIDS in Africa

  • 22.9 million people in Africa are living with HIV and/or AIDS
  • 1.9 million people in Sub-Sahara became infected in 2010
  • Also in 2010 1.2 million people died of one or both of these diseases

Orphans with AIDS

  • There are nearly 34 million orphans in Africa and almost 11 out of the 34 million are infected with AIDS or HIV.
  • The amount of kids that are put into orphanages has rose from 3.5% to 32% because they were said to have AIDS

Most Affected Countries

  • South Africa is the country in Africa with the largest epidemic of HIV and AIDS
  • Followed by Swaziland, Lesotho, and Botswana

Girls in Africa

  • Of the 2.7 million people in the region of Sub Saharan Africa that are between 15-24 and are living with HIV about 70% are females
  • More than 1 in 10 females living in this age group are living with HIV
