Digital Citizenship: E Commerce
By Matthew Nicodemus
What is E Commerce?
The buying and selling of products through the use of the internet. Ecommerce allows consumers to electronically exchange goods and services with no barriers of time or distance. Electronic commerce has expanded rapidly over the past five years and is predicted to continue at this rate, or even accelerate.
Paid Sites
If you have ever used a websites where you pay to use their site you are participating in eCommerce.
Amazon
If you have ever bought or sold anything through amazon you have participated in eCommerce.
Gerneral online purchases
Buying anything online using your credit/bank card and you have participated in eCommerce.
Basic Ethical Concepts
eCommerce has the same implications as buying and selling things in person. Both the buyer and the seller have rights through internet transactions as they do in physical transactions. Students need to understand that just because you cannot see the money it is just as real as the money in their piggy bank. Understanding privacy and information rights is also a big part of eCommerce, there is no such thing as a free lunch. When you buy something the person you buy from expects payment, likewise when you sell something you expect payment.
