The Beginning of the Colonies

Rhode Island - Founded by Roger Williams in 1631 for separation of church and state.

Connecticut - Founded by Thomas Hooker in 1636, founded by a group of puritans.

Massachusetts - Founded by John Winthrop in 1630 for puritans.

New Hampshire - Founded by John Mason in 1623 (1679) to establish a fishing colony.

Economics and Government

Most of the New England colonies were controlled by the crown. New Hampshire was at one time a proprietary colony. The economics of New England mainly consisted of ship building, mining, timber, and fishing.

King Philip's War - a period of time where natives attacked New England colonies.
