Newsletter for the Shadow Hills Elementary School Community

Principal Point

Thank you!!

There are no words that can adequately express the thanks and appreciation that I have for the entire Shadow Hills Community for the work put in at home and at school to make this year a success. While it was far from traditional, I believe our students learned and that learning is due to the huge investment by the students, their parents and the Shadow Hills Staff. One day we may look back in amazement at what was accomplished.

I wish our 6th graders the best as most of them move on to Riverglen Junior High School. We will miss this class of kids. For me, it was the 6th year in a row with many of them. I enjoyed watching them grow up.

Until we meet up again in August, I wish you all the best! Students - please play outside and be a kid as much as you can this summer and remember to read, read, read! Parents, thank you for sharing your kids with us. They are wonderful!

Have a great summer!

Dr. Z.

Turn Summer Days into Prime Learning Time

In the summer, children normally don’t have enough opportunities to practice skills they’ve learned during the school year. As a result, achievement scores in math and reading fall during this time, according to research. It’s known as the "summer slide."

It doesn’t have to be that way! Plan learning activities this summer so your child will be better prepared for school in the fall.

Try these ideas to help your child retain and build skills:

  • Encourage your child to keep a summer journal. Set aside a certain time each day for him to write.

  • Work with your child on typing skills. If you don’t have a computer at home, do this at the library.

  • Play with water. Under your supervision, have your child use measuring cups to estimate and measure volume. Introduce words like funnel, volume and weight.

  • Learn while traveling. Get a map and let your child help mark the route. Ask him to check the price of gas and how many gallons you’re putting in your car. Have him read road signs and announce speed limits as they change.

  • Take your child to the library often. Let him select books, but guide his choices so he doesn’t take home books below his reading level. Ask the librarian for advice.

Do you miss volunteering in your child’s class? Are you looking for a socially-distanced way to help out? Check out the Shadow Hills Elementary Wish List. The needs of our school, teachers, and students are changing quickly this year. The Shadow Hills Elementary Wish List contains an up to date list of the items the teachers need most – like hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Please consider donating these essential items to the school.

See the attached flyer for information on the PTO Papa John’s fundraiser. Our school code is valid for the entire school year and valid at all locations in the Treasure Valley, so friends and family can help support our school, too! Papa John’s is donating 20% to the PTO!
