I hope all staff enjoys this week of being recognized and pampered! Our Cannon staff is so incredible and deserves special recognition EVERY day! Thank you for all you do to make our school the place to be!

Proud to be your principal!

I am excited to report that the Education Foundation has blessed our school with a $5,000 grant. The grant was written to purchase Fountas and Pinnell Level Literacy Intervention materials to use for instruction with our Tier 3 students. With this addition we will be able to support reading levels DRA 1-40. The program provides:

  • Combination of reading, writing, and phonics/word study.
  • Emphasis on teaching for comprehending strategies.
  • Explicit attention to genre and to the features of nonfiction and fiction texts.
  • Special attention to disciplinary reading, literature inquiry, and writing about reading.
  • Specific work on sounds, letters, and words in activities designed to help students notice the details of written language and learn how words "work."
  • Close reading to deepen and expand comprehension.
  • Explicit teaching of effective and efficient strategies for expanding vocabulary.
  • Explicit teaching for fluent and phrased reading.
  • Use of writing about reading for the purpose of communicating and learning how to express ideas for a particular purpose and audience using a variety of writing strategies.

One of the key components that I LOVED is the way to monitor student progress with running records and comprehension rubrics built in. The lessons are very teacher friendly. Please stop and let me show you what I am working on :)

This link will be provided in the staff newsletter for the rest of the year, so check back often for new updates to the list!

  • STAFF ASSIGNMENTS FOR 2015-2016 - In order to help us plan forward for next year, ALL staff is required to complete the Cannon Staff Assignment survey by 4:00 pm on May 8th. CLICK HERE TO COMPLETE THIS SURVEY.

  • GCISD PRINCIPALS TOUR CANNON ON WEDNESDAY 5/6 - All GCISD elementary principals, along with some central office staff, will be on campus on Wednesday, 5/6 from 8:00-9:30 to do Instructional Rounds. The purpose of these walkthroughs is to allow district administrators the opportunity to observe at each campus and learn how each campus is progressing towards district goals, as outlined in the Learning Platform Rubric. Administrators will arrive at 7:45 for a brief meeting to receive campus maps, schedules, and specific "look-fors". They will begin visiting classrooms promptly at 8:00, so please make sure breakfast is finished and scholars are actively engaged in learning by 8:00 am. There will not be a scheduled line-up of classrooms/times for principals to visit, they will simply use their maps and visit ALL classrooms, including specials, special ed, etc... Classrooms may be visited by more than one group. Please note that administrators are asked to provide feedback through an electronic form. This feedback will be shared with all staff and used to help us evaluate our own progress! Several administrators have mentioned that they are excited to visit Cannon classrooms, as a result of the current interest in our school by families across the district - they want to see what's different & special about our awesome school! I can't WAIT for them to visit and look forward to sharing their feedback with all of you!

  • CHILD NUTRITION WEEK - This week is Child Nutrition Week! Please remember to thank our awesome cafeteria staff for all of their hard work! Having scholars write notes of thanks or making posters to post in the cafeteria/kitchen would be a wonderful way to show them how much they are appreciated!!

  • END of YEAR SUMMATIVES - Please make sure you are prepared for your EoY Summative. Please click here to see the summative schedule. Don't forget to complete sections II & III of the PDAS Teacher-Self Report prior to your summative. Also, please make sure that you arrive at your summative conference time with your current year PLP updated with reflections/evidences. Finally, be prepared to discuss your ideas for planning forward for next year's PLP, in order to discuss/share professional learning activities that you are planning for the 2015-2016 school year. Time will be provided during the final sessions of PLC's of the school year to work on your 2015-2016 PLP. As you start to think about next year's PLP, please remember that PLP's are about your own professional growth. These should not be completed as a team with all members sharing the exact same goals.
