Library 2018-2019
An Update for BCS Families
THANK YOU FOR A GREAT YEAR!
So much went on in the Library this year, in addition to lots and lots of reading. Sixth graders came to the library with their classes once a week, in addition to their independent visits. This was a huge year for manga, and it was exciting to see so many students coming in daily to read their favorite series and explore new titles. Seventh and eighth graders started regular visits and we can't wait to expand our program with them next fall. Our high schoolers continued to take advantage of the library for independent reading, writing, and research. Thank you teachers, for making sure your students get to the library as often as possible!
2019 in the Library
Book News
We acquired amazing new books this year, and continue to grow our popular magazine and comic book collection. As winners of a substantial grant from the NYCDOE we were able to purchase a special collection of books focused on identity and inclusion. Families, we'd love to see you in the library, so please visit any time. If you are interested in volunteering next year, send us an email!
Podcasts, Poetry, and Projects
In the library this year, we talked about our identities and who we are as readers, using picture books as our mentor texts. We were visited by A list authors Carol Weston, Jane Kelley, and Jacqueline Woodson. Carol and Jane conducted workshops with our student writers, while Jacqueline was the highlight of our first All School Great Read project. We discussed the dangers of cyberbullying and identity theft, read poetry, and learned about new books. We also created segments for the BCS Reads Podcast that you can listen to here.
Thank You PTA!
Thanks to the generosity of the BCS PTA, we are able to keep our beautiful website running. The platform we use, LibGuides, also allowed us to add some great new classroom resources for debates, historical fiction, extreme weather, and earthquakes. Check them out here.
Summer Reading is Live!
Summer Reading assignments, book lists, and more can now be found on the BNS/BCS Library website. Get a head start on preparing your family for reading over the summer. Check out the website for all kinds of information and resources.
