Sanitation

To start off this Smore, I'd like to define what sanitation means, it is conditions relating to public health, especially the provision of clean water and proper sewage disposal. It is the preventing of hazardous materials to come in contact with humans.

Why Sanitation?

There is now clear evidence that sanitation is very important, in particular, hand washing; are defecating and either eating or preparing foods. Hand washing with soap can significantly decrease the incidences of diarrhea. The promotion of hand washing with soap is also a great strategy to fight against bird flu and many other physical and biological diseases. Especially in our kitchens, bacteria can easily move about freely, spread, and cause these deadly diseases.

How can we achieve Sanitation?

Good Sanitation is achieved when everyone in a community understands the health importance of safe disposal, and takes the necessary practical steps to promote good personal hygiene and public health. This includes access to, and consistent use of, a safe and hygienic toilet. This can help us have an increased life expectancy, savings in health care costs and reduced water treatment costs. But these are examples of outside the school kitchen and home, now lets talk about them. Wash your hands, after preparing foods, handling raw meat or poultry, blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing into your hands. Scrub your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds, or sing the happy birthday song twice. Even if clean running water and soap isn't available to you, you can always use hand sanitizers. Cleaning hands isn't the only way to keep our area of work sanitized. Another few ways to achieve sanitation can be by wearing clean clothing, washing your hair frequently and cutting your fingernails. In kitchens especially its very important we don't cross contaminate.

Maintaining personal hygiene is necessary for many reasons; personal, social, health, or simply as a way of life. Keeping a good standard of hygiene helps to prevent the development and spread of infections, illnesses and bad odors. The most important and dangerous reason being health issues. A survey, carried out for National Food Safety Week, found that 12% of people only change or disinfect their kitchen sponge once a month and 6% change it even less often. This shows not only how industrial level kitchens work, but also our own houses, where it is considered it to be okay even if our sponges are months old, proper hygiene is not maintained and safety procedures are not followed at all and not frowned upon.
