Classroom Happenings
Dear Family Member:
This week our class will be reading stories about how to stay safe in bad weather. Children will also learn about severe weather conditions, such as hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, earthquakes, droughts, and floods.
Here are some activities that you can do with your child to help reinforce the skills we will be practicing.
Word Workout
- Vocabulary: safe, prepare Make a list and gather materials for a weather supply kit. Include items such as a first aid kit, canned food, and a battery-operated radio.
- My Words to Know
High-Frequency Words: my, are, have, with, is, little, she, was Have your child think of sentences using the review words. Write the sentences on paper, and then read them together.
Category Words: question words Look for pictures of severe weather in a newspaper, or a magazine, or online. Ask your child questions about each picture.
Phonics: h, e, f, r, b, l, k, ck Play “I Spy,” having your child guess the names of objects that have the letters h, e, f, r, b, l, c, or ck.
Comprehension: key details
Tell your child to imagine that a blizzard might happen in a few days. Ask your child to circle items that should be included in a weather safety kit. Encourage your child to tell why each item should be included.
Everyday Math
This week during math we will discuss body heights caparisons using classroom objects, compare, count and sort pets by interpreting graphs and we will play "What's My Rule?", children figure out and apply sorting rules as they play a game.
Science
We will finish up our unit on Forces and Motion this week.
Important Information
-March is Reading Awareness Month. We will spend the entire month celebrating our love for reading with Space Exploration as our theme.
-Dr. Suess' Birthday is March 2nd. We will celebrate at school with fun crafts and activities.-Thank you to all the parents who helped with Valentine's party whether you were able to participate or provided items for our Ice Cream Social.
-Mother Goose Night was fun! Of course we always wish everyone can make it out and enjoy our math festivities and food.
-Troubadors visited our school. I will add pictures to my webpage this week. Watch for classroom pictures of our Space Exploration to come as well!!
-Today we had 100% of our literacy bags return to school! Lets have 100% reading everyday this week!!!
-We are interviewing for our new Superintendent on Wednesday and Thursday evening. Please come out and support our school by attending the receptions from 6:00-6:45. Interviews will be conducted at 7:00 each evening and open to the public.
