Setting the Captives Free
The Church is Gods' appointed agency for the salvation of men. It was organized for service and its mission is to carry the gospel to the world. Acts of the Apostles p.9 The first time I read Isaiah 61:1 I thought the Bible reference to captives applied only to those who are physically bound by walls, fences and razor wire, but the Holy Spirit revealed to me we are ALL captives of sin. Some of us are mentally/emotionally bound, some physically imprisoned and some spiritually incarcerated. Today I want to focus on those who are physically imprisoned. There are presently about nine million people in the world who are in jail or prison. The U. S. alone accounts for 25% of that number, over two million people. Surely the harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. One objective of the Gulf States Conference is to establish an active Prison Ministry in every church in our conference and to assist those already established with training, resources and information thereby making us more efficient tools in the hand of God. This work is a calling for our youth, young adults and mature members of God's Church.
There have been many people in our Churches who have said, "I am ready to go home" (Heaven). However, we are not going anywhere until we share God's love everywhere. It is time to pray. With a willing heart, ask God to show you your part in this work He has outlined in His word. 2 Peter 3:9 states, "The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us ward, not willing that ANY should perish, but that ALL should come to repentance. God desires us to fall out of love with things and fall in love with people. The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord has appointed me to preach good tidings to the meek; He hath sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the CAPTIVES, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound. Isaiah 61:1 We have been called to "Set the captives free."
