Auschwititz-Birkenau or Auschwitz 2 , was the first prisoners of war and a few polish prisoners from Auschwitz 1. auschwititz-birkenau was originally designed for imprisoning large number of soviet prisoners of war. Although it continued to serve as a concentration camp , it also functioned as a killing center from March 1942 until November 1944.

Auschwitz II, or Auschwitz-Birkenau , began in the vicinity of Brzezinka in October 1941.
Of the three camps established near Oswiecim , the Auschwitz-Birkenau camp had the largest total prisoner population . It was divided into 10 sections separated by electrified barbed-wire fences. Auschwitz I , it was patrolled by SS guards.
