Little Elm High School
Weekly Newsletter - August 25, 2019
Little Elm ISD's mission is to Engage, Equip, and Empower each student to realize their full potential. District leaders are always looking for new ways to help students and parents have a deeper understanding as to what it means to be College, Career, and Life Ready.
As a student progresses through high school, the college, career, and life ready indicators on each student's Dashboard located in Focus show "complete" with a green check mark. If it is grey with an “x”, it means a student has not met the number of indicators to achieve that goal. For example, a student is considered College ready if they have met three out of four indicators, such as college-level classes, passed Algebra 2, maintained at least a 2.8 GPA, and participated in a college readiness placement assessment, such as ACT, SAT, or Texas Success Initiative.
Little Elm ISD will equip students with the skills necessary to be competitive in the current and future job market by offering a broad range of relevant pathways, exposing every student to collegiate opportunities, building career connections, and enhancing life experiences.
The dashboard was launched a year ago after a committee of ten District administrators researched current trends, best practices, and identified the common idicators for what it means to be college, career, and life ready. Based on their research, they found these readiness indicators most accurately reflect the educational landscape of the 21st century. Multiple metrics that help develop the dashboard include Advanced Placement courses, Algebra II, early college credit, industry certifications, attendance, and community service. In addition to a student’s graduation plan, the College, Career, and Life Ready Dashboard can provide students with information and direction they can use to shape their high school experience and plan for their goals after high school graduation.

Class Assemblies Recap
Parents,
Each class (Freshmen, Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors) had class assemblies this past week. (See full presentation here.) We need your help in reminding students the importance of being on time to class as well as dressing for success. Dress code reminders:- Pants and other articles of clothing that are torn, ragged, frayed or with holes must have a covering underneath so that no skin is visible from shoulder blades to mid-thigh or longer in length.
Dresses, skirts, shorts, “skorts”, and jumpers must be mid-thigh length or longer.
Back, chest, midriff and undergarments must be covered
Unacceptable items include - off the shoulder shirts, low-cut shirts, shirts that show any part of the abdomen, shorts that rise above mid-thigh, skirts that rise above mid-thigh, and holes in jeans that are above mid-thigh.
For your LEHS student, being late could be the difference between knowing the vital information asked on an exam or improving their work. If your LEHS student is routinely late to school they are missing out on their learning and affecting their attendance. If they are only 5 minutes late every day they miss 3 days of school in a year. If they are 30 minutes late every day they miss 19 days of school. The morning traffic around LEHS has settled into a regular pattern. Hopefully you have adjusted your morning routine to make sure your LEHS student is arriving to school with plenty of time to reach their first period class before 7:20 am when the tardy bell rings. Students who have more than 3 tardies in a week will be assigned a disciplinary consequence. Thanks in advance for helping us encourage this life habit of being on time.

Students may pick up their laptop the day after their Device Protection Fee has been paid in the library before school, after school, or during lunch.
- Reduced device protection fee to use a district issued laptop.
- Fee waiver to take the SAT and/or ACT for free

High school students often do not want to participate in the Free and Reduced Lunch Program. The Federal Free/Reduced Lunch Program is the standard used by many programs to qualify students for financial assistance. Even if a student never uses their eligibility in the lunchroom, they can benefit greatly in other areas if they qualify for the Lunch Program. Eligibility has to be reestablished each year. You can fill out the application here. We highly suggest that all families fill out an application to see if you qualify.

The Denton County Office of History and Culture is looking for high school students to join the Denton County Junior Historians program!
Denton County Junior Historians is an opportunity for high school students (grades 9-12) to work together to discuss and engage in local history in new and interesting ways. Members attend meetings twice a month on Tuesday evenings, volunteer at special events, and work together on group projects. The projects include designing exhibits and working with historical artifacts from the museum's collection. This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop leadership skills, to give back to the community, meet new people, and engage in local history.
Denton County Junior Historians is designed to benefit both the students and the Office of History & Culture! As a historical organization, we understand the importance of engaging the youth of our community. We want the students to have a lasting appreciation for local history and carry the torch for future generations.
Students will cultivate important life skills such as: teamwork, cooperation, conflict resolution, time-management, organization, communication, public speaking, and negotiation skills. Students will also be exposed to professional museum practices, taking on the role of curator and historian through special projects.
Last November, Denton County Junior Historians received its official charter as Chapter No. 933 of the Junior Historians of Texas from the Texas State Historical Association. If you visit our website, you can see past student projects. We can’t wait to meet the 2019-20 Junior Historians!
