The word pumpkin originated from the Greek word Pepon which means large melon. They originated in the ancient Americas and have became an important part of the Halloween festivities. The pumpkin and squash are in the same family of melons. The Pilgrims made many different pumpkin based food and drinks. They would even make pumpkin beer. The most widely known use of the pumpkin is the carving of Jack-O-Lanterns.
