Safety Message from SDUSD

Please find helpful links related to COVID-19 and School Safety below.

The District mask policy has also been updated: Masks are always required indoors. Masks are now required outdoors at all times while students are on campus unless they are eating.

Important Things to Note

  • MEA is not an online school and will not have classes meet online this year unless traditional schools are also meeting online. Studygroup classes are mandatory for high school students. If you are in need of online/virtual school, please email virtualacademy@sandi.net (K-8) or reach out to iHigh (9-12).
  • There have been some changes made recently to the CA Ed Code involving Independent Study. We are doing our best to offer the same program that you know and love while remaining compliant to the new requirements. The changes mostly involve increased documentation and data reporting on the part of teachers and staff.
  • We are working through how we can continue to offer a multitude of extracurricular activities for our K-5 students with new Covid procedures involving parents on campus. Once procedures are established, we will publish the extracurricular schedule and related protocols.
  • As always, please reach out to us with any questions!

Student Handbook

Students in grades 6-12 should review the Mt. Everest student handbook with their parents and refer to their supervising teacher with any questions. Please find the handbook here.

Technology Support and Resources

Please see information related to technology resources and support here.

Student Drop Off/Pick Up

  • Parents of K-5th grade students should park by the elementary wing and walk students to their classrooms where parents sign students in outside the door. The elementary gate will be open from 8:45-9:05. Parents arriving after 9am will need to park by the front office and walk students to their classroom. Pick up will be the same as drop-off.

  • 6-12th graders should be dropped of at the front of school and enter campus through the front office.

Daily Mindfulness and Meditation

These daily sessions will include about 10 minutes of mindfulness and meditation as well as other activities to foster health and wellness and connectedness in our community. All MEA Community members are welcome!

School Site Council (SSC) and Site Governance Team (SGT)

Looking to support our awesome school with your time? The Mt. Everest Academy SSC and SGT have open positions for at least one parent (SSC and SGT) and two students (SSC). If you are a parent or student interested in running for School Site Council and/or Site Governance Team, please submit your name and a short (3-4 sentence) biography to Principal Browne at cbrowne@sandi.net by Friday, 9/10. Biographies will be shared next week for voting purposes.

The School Site Council consists of elected members representing parents, teachers, students, the school principal, and other school employees. This group is responsible for reviewing the school's improvement plan and allocating fiscal resources to support Mt. Everest Academy's goals in the areas of curriculum development and instruction. The State Legislature, as well as the Mt. Everest Academy teaching staff and administration, believes that the best decisions are made by those individuals who are most affected by them.

The Site Governance Team is a shared decision making body required at each school by the San Diego Unified School District Board of Education. The team discusses issues, gathers input and makes recommendations about topics affecting our school and our children with an emphasis on the instructional program.

The SSC and SGT will meet a minimum of seven times during the year and meetings will usually be scheduled on Wednesdays from 2pm-3pm. Meetings will be held on Zoom. Scheduled dates for this year include:

  • 9/29/21
  • 10/27/21
  • 12/1/21
  • 1/12/22
  • 2/16/22
  • 3/9/22
  • 4/27/22

We greatly appreciate your willingness to support Mt. Everest with your time!

Welcome New Staff!

Aaron Rubin - Head Counselor

My name is Aaron Rubin, and I am excited to be starting as Head Counselor for the 21-22 school year. I have been working as an educator for 20 years, as both a counselor and classroom teacher. I am credentialed to teach elementary, middle school science, high school chemistry, and counsel students K-12. My most recent counseling position was that of Head Counselor at Mission Bay High School and I've spent the last three years launching a new science curriculum as a middle school science teacher. I spend my free time with my 5-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son. Lately, we have been working on our mini-golf game and discovering new games on the Switch. As we move through the upcoming year, I look forward to getting a chance to meet the members of the MEA family.

Stevaneia Yacob - Physics Teacher

My name is Stevaneia Yacob and I’m new to the family of Mt. Everest Academy! I have loved Science ever since I was a little kid and I have been applying it in my daily life. When it comes to education, I graduated from San Diego State University (SDSU) with a Bachelors in Chemistry, and I also earned my Teaching Credential from SDSU. Something that I enjoy doing the most is spending time with my family (especially my baby girl- Elena) and traveling to different countries. So far I have traveled to five different countries and I cannot wait to travel to more places. Working with young individuals always makes me happy and full of energy. I’m really excited to teach Physics and I will try my best to be a valuable teacher where learning will always be fun!
