Stewart Stampede
November 2023
From the Principal
I hope everyone is doing well.
There are a few big events going on this month. Please be sure to look at the calendar in this newsletter so you don't miss anything. The month of October seemed to fly by. Thanksgiving break is just around the corner (less than three weeks away).
Please make sure to mark your calendars for our Veteran's Day celebration on November 10, 2023. If you or someone in your family is a Veteran or is currently serving, we would love to honor you here at Stewart Elementary. If you would like to come to this exciting event, please pre-register using the link provided. We will begin checking everyone in at 8:40AM. The parade will begin at 9:05AM.
As many of you may know, during the October board meeting, the Board of Trustees approved the cell phone committee's following recommendation regarding the use of cell phones during the school day by students in grades pre-kindergarten through sixth grade:
- Cell phones and smartwatches may be used respectfully and responsibly before school and after school.
- Cell phones and smartwatches should not be used to capture video, audio, or images at school or on the bus.
- Cell phones and smartwatches should be set on silet mode and kept in backpacks, lockers, or other designated areas and should not be visible during school hours including instructional time, reward time, free time, lunch, and in the hallways.
- Cell phones and smartwatches may be permitted in extenuating circumstances with permission from a staff member. (ex. to notify parent/guardian of a late bus.
At Stewart Elementary, we will be enforcing these rules. Cell phones and smart watches may not be used or worn during school hours. They must be turned off and kept in backpacks. We realize that several students have cell phones and smart watches. Students are aware of the policy for cell phones and complying to the rule has not been an issue. In the last several months several students have been wearing smart watches to school. This policy will be an adjustment for them. We will begin monitoring this beginning December 1, 2023.
Our plan is to require students to place their cell phones and smart watches in their backpacks when they arrive at school each morning. Several of our families have purchased smart watches to help track their children and keep in touch with them as they travel home from school. We understand this. Teachers will be adding a reminder at the end of the day for students to put on any smart watch they may have in their backpack. This is similar to how we handle the use of cell phones.
Please know that there was a great deal of time and discussion by a cell phone committee that worked to develop this recommendation for our Board of Trustees. The committee evaluated the districts current policy, input from parents, and the recommendations by the School Health Advisory Council Mental Health Sub Committee. GT Referral Deadline December 15th
Referral requests are now open for Conroe Independent School District Gifted and Talented program. Although the testing will not take place until late January, referral requests are accepted at this time. Referral requests can be made by the parents and/or campus staff. It is recommended that parents of 2 nd grade students wait until CogAT scores have arrived before nominating their child because CogAT scores are part of the GT assessment. If you are interested in referring your child, you may want to discuss this with your child’s teacher. Referrals will be accepted October 2- December 15, 2023. GT testing will occur during the window of January 22- February 2, 2024. Results will not be available until May 2024.
You may request a referral form from the front office or the Assistant Principal, Heather Paugh.
You can also find the referral form and other GT information on the CISD GT homepage.
