Happy Thanksgiving!

Dear Wamogo families and friends,

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I would like to express how thankful I am...for the students of Wamogo, who excel at every new academic, athletic, artistic or musical endeavor...for the teachers and staff that support the students with kindness, respect and unfailing encouragement...for the parents/guardians of Wamogo students that foster home/school communication and assist in ways to continually improve our school. Each day is a new adventure at Wamogo and I am thankful to be a part of this community.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Message from the Athletic Director

Dear Wamogo parents/guardians,

This year Wamogo Regional Middle/High School will be initiating its first-ever endeavor in the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference’s Unified Sports Program.

Unified Sports, which is a branch of Special Olympics, brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities to train and compete on the same team. Wamogo’s initial offering will be middle school basketball. The goal of this program is for athletes to improve their physical fitness, sharpen their skills, experience competition, and have fun, too. The concept of combining athletes with intellectual disabilities and those without (called partners) was first introduced in the United States in the mid-1980s to provide another level of challenge for higher ability athletes with disabilities and to promote equality and inclusion. Today, the initiative includes virtually all Special Olympics sports, and Unified Sports competitions are an important part of Special Olympics World Games, as well as local, state and national Games.

Middle school athletes and their partners will be practicing basketball with their coach on Tuesdays and Thursdays beginning January 9th from 2:35 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. If partners are currently on the middle school boys’ or girls’ basketball teams, they are excused from their regular practice until the Unified practice is completed. In February, there will be competitions and tournaments in which Wamogo will participate.

As with any Wamogo sport, parents of athletes and participants must log in and complete all information via the Family ID web site. If the participant or athlete is already playing on their sports team, a separate parental acknowledgment of the child’s participation in Unified Sports will be required.

If any additional information is required, please contact Athletic Director Dan Nemergut at dnemergut@rsd6.org.
