Cuming Happenings in 4-H is Going Electronic!

Greetings Cuming County 4-H! As many of you have heard, Cuming Happenings in 4-H Newsletter is going electronic as of April 1, 2016. Each month, you will receive an email with the link to the latest newsletter. The newsletter will be posted on 4-HOnline and the Cuming County 4-H website. You will have the ability to read and print the newsletter with easy 24/7 access! If you would like to continue to receive a hard copy of the newsletter please call the office and ask Ellan to put you on the hard copy list by March 15!

Something NEW!

We would like to try something NEW! With the newsletter going electronic, we would like to send out weekly News Updates to help keep you in the loop! There is always something new going on in 4-H and we would like to make sure you have all the information available to you! These News Updates will be sent out to your email via this program called S'More! In these news updates you can expect to see reminders of upcoming events or deadlines as well as some new information. Our hope with the news updates is to simply make 4-H information readily available at the easiest way possible for you!

It's that time of year again to start enrolling for the 2016 4-H year! The process will be the same as last year using the 4-H Online enrollment systems.
  • You can find step by step guides on our website.
  • Leaders and Volunteers are also required to enroll using the online system.
  • Enrollment must be completed by March 15.

Need Help Enrolling? No Problem!

We are offering 4-H Online Enrollment Open Houses for anyone that would like help enrolling for 2016. If you cannot make one of the dates below, contact Ellan to set up a time with her to help you enroll.

Club Window Display Contest

For 4-H Awareness Week this year we are having a Club Window Display Contest! Clubs are encouraged to put up a window display at a local business. The theme for Kick-Off and Awareness week this year is "4-H Grows Stronger Families". We ask that your club's display follows this theme to help promote 4-H as a family organization! The displays will be voted on by 4-Hers, youth and families at the Kick-Off event. Prizes will be awarded to the top displays! Help us show Cuming County what a great place 4-H is!

Sign Up for Volunteer Comittees

NOW is the time to select which activity you would like to assist with for the 2016 4-H year. One adult from each family is asked to volunteer to help with at least one county-wide activity. Please contact the Extension Office with the specific activity you would like to assist with or a time of day you are available to help. Let us know your preferences by March 4. If we do not hear from you we will assign you a volunteer responsibility. See the 2015 fairbook for a list of the activities (note dates will differ for 2016). Refer to the 2016 4-H calendar from the February newsletter for this year's dates. Grandparents are also welcome to volunteer. This is a great opportunity to learn about the 4-H program!

2016 Public Speaking & PSA Contest

The 4-H Public Speaking and PSA Contests will be held on March 22 at West Point Beemer Jr.-Sr. High School. There will be four age divisions with ribbons and trophies in each division. The entry deadline is March 17th. The special topic for this year’s Public Speaking Contest is “4-H Grows Stronger Families”

The PSA category must following the topic “4-H Grows Confidence.” All 4-H PSA’s must include the following tagline within the last 10 seconds: “Learn more about Nebraska Extension 4-H Youth Development Program at 4h.unl.edu.” The tagline is included in the 60 second time limit. The tagline Know How, Know Now should not be used.

Wisner Clover College

Participate in the Creative Design Clover College. Members will create a project or two that they can exhibit at the fair! Participants are asked to bring a sack lunch. Adults are encouraged to accompany participants to support their creative ventures. The workshop will run from 10 am-1:30 pm in order to conclude in time for participants to attend the St. Patrick’s Day Parade. There will be a small fee for project materials, details to come. Please pre‐register by Wednesday, March 9.

Omaha Fashion Week Alternate to Show on the Runway

We would like to congratulate 4-H member Rebecca McKay on having her garment chosen to show on the runway for the Omaha Fashion Week! A tip for those wanting to apply next year: The garments selected to show on the runway have unique design elements and high craft details. Consider using a distinct pattern, making your own pattern or incorporating styling details to create a fashion forward look. Keep this in mind as you plan your clothing projects this coming year!

Bees and Pollonation 4-H Essay Contest

The Foundation for the Preservation of Honey Bees, Inc. is sponsoring a 4-H essay contest. The 2016 topic is "Bees and Pollination. How Important is it?" The Nebraska submission deadline is February 26 and the National submission deadline is March 4. More details and rules of the contest can be found by clicking here.
