Kindergarten Students Explore Tookany Creek

Cheltenham Elementary Kindergartners in Ms. Quinn's class continue their study of animals and their habitat with a special walking trip to Tookany Creek. Ofcr. Gerry and Erin Czech, local conservation officers and Cheltenham parents were our trail guides. They shared water safety tips, water sampling techniques, and lots of information on wildlife and the importance of respecting and preserving animal habitat. What a perfect experience for these young environmentalists right in their own backyard!

Cheltenham Township Librarians Visit CES

Representatives from the Cheltenham Township Library visited with students this week to discuss special events occurring this summer. The representatives were dressed in superhero costumes, which happen to be one of the the fun activities that will take place at the library. The Cheltenham Township Library System kicks off the HEROIC 2015 Summer Reading Program this summer. For more information visit

You may have seen a group of individuals walking around the school during arrival and dismissal times this week wearing safety vests and taking pictures. The audit team made up of planning commission staff, municipal representatives, school and school district representatives, parents, teachers, community organizations, and local residents conducted a walkability audit this week of 3 routes surrounding Cheltenham Elementary School. Cheltenham Elementary has the largest number of students in the township who walk to school, yet they must cross some highly travelled roads and busy intersections.

Your input will help us make the walking routes to Cheltenham Elementary School safer. We look forward to working with this group to promote walking, health, and safe routes to our school.

You can check out the walking map and give comments at

The CES class of 2015 had a wonderful time at Mermaid Lake. 4th graders spent the chilly morning swimming, miniature golfing, eating, playing volleyball, basketball, and much more. The sun did start to poke through the clouds in the afternoon and a fun game of kickball took place. I would like to thank all of the parent volunteers who assisted with the trip. I would also like to thank the PTO-4th grade committee for all of their hard work in planning the event. Finally, I would like to thank the 4th grade teachers Mr. Ferris, Mr. Zimmer, Mrs. Smith, and Mrs. Falso for ensuring that our students had a wonderful time. A special thank you to Mr. Ward who assisted as a second Lifeguard and Activities Coordinator.
