Issue No. 6: What does IB cost?
Student Fees
IB Certificates vs. IB Diploma Program. . . a refresher
During enrollment their sophomore year, students interested in IB courses will need to decide if they are going to participate in the full Diploma Program or if they plan to take IB classes for Certificates. Here are the differences:
Full Diploma Program: To earn the IB Diploma, students will have to
- Take six IB courses during their junior and senior years.
- Take IB's Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course during second semester junior year and first semester senior year.
- Successfully complete the Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) program. Students will have to participate in community service, physical activities, and creative projects.
- Write an Extended Essay (4,000 words) based on independent study that connects to work done in one of the six IB classes taken.
IB Certificates:
- Students who do not want to do the full Diploma Program can still take IB classes for Certificates. This means they pick and choose the IB classes they want and sit for the IB examinations with the hope of scoring high enough to earn college credit (similar to the way AP classes work). Students and parents should understand that score requirements differ between colleges and that some colleges do not yet offer credit for IB coursework.
- Students who pursue IB Certificates do not and can not take part in Theory of Knowledge, CAS, or write the Extended Essay.
Fees For Diploma Candidates
Fees for Certificates
Currently, the registration fee is $160 and the exam fee for each IB class is $110. Students only pay the registration fee once for each year they test.
For example, if John takes IB Biology HL and IB English HL (both two-year courses), he will test at the end of the second year and will pay his registration fee of $160 and $110 for each of the classes. Total=$380
If Melissa also takes IB Biology HL (two-year course) but she takes IB Psychology SL (one-year course), at the end of her first year, she will take the IB Psychology exam. She will pay her $160 registration fee and the $110 exam fee for IB Psych. At the end of her second year, she will then take the IB Biology exam and will have to pay the registration fee of $160 (because it is a different testing year) and the $110 exam fee for IB Biology. Total for both years=$540
Note: The costs of these fees typically increase in small increments each year.
Financial Assistance
IB vs. AP vs. Dual Credit
Advanced Placement: $89 for each AP test a student takes
Dual Credit:
University of Missouri-Kansas City: $90.03 per credit hour. Most classes are 3 credit hours for a total of $270.09 in tuition per class.
University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg):$85.00 per credit hour. Most classes are 3 credit hours for a total of $255.00 in tuition per class.
When IB classes begin in the 2015-16, RPHS will continue to offer both AP and dual credit classes.
