UWP Mechanical Hug Project Donation
Engineering students from the University of Wisconsin-Platteville were asked by district occupational therapy or special education staff to make a piece of equipment that would allow special education students to actively get deep touch pressure to their body. Like a hard hug, deep touch pressure is calming to most children and can help them calm and focus for better listening, learning, and playing. We have had success with programs with children in which deep touch pressure is systematically applied to their arms, legs, and back by an adult. However, if a child is able to get the deep touch pressure themselves, it is often more effective. In addition, deep touch pressure from the mechanical hug can help children who may be over-sensitive to touch accept these sensations (i.e. better tolerate touch from others or touch of things such as glue). By crawling under the series of bolsters, the children are receiving deep touch pressure primarily to their backs, arms, and legs and using heavy muscle work at the same time for further regulatory benefits.
The project was a capstone project for seniors: Steven Davis, Jevic Landwehr, Molly Nerison, Brett Wagner. The mechanical hug was donated to the school at no cost. We would like to thank the UWP engineering students, Professor Daryl Logan, Jim Sands Engagement Specialist for the Pioneer Academic Center for Community Engagement, and Platteville School District Staff members Emily Christensen and Megan Bohlken for their guidance and submission of the project idea.
