A Message From the Principal - Mrs. VanderVeen
Hello Marauder Families,
The end of semester 1 is just around the corner and we are encouraging our students to finish strong. We will be on a finals schedule for Wednesday, February 1 and Thursday, February 2 with a non-student day on Friday, February 3. Students have time within the finals schedule for additional supports and interventions from 7:00am-7:30am on these two days. The intent of this time is for student to get extra help from their teachers so that they can be successful in passing their finals and earning credit for all of their classes. We will also continue to have supports in the Writing Center and the ASC (Academic Success Center) all week. FINISH STRONG MARAUDERS!
Semester begins on Monday, February 6th. Please make sure that your students review their second semester schedule in Schoology and bring that with them on Monday. We will NOT be printing hard copies of their second semester schedules, students can review them at any time.
We have had several reasons for celebration this month, to include Mr. Mike Moore, Assistant Principal receiving the Mukilteo School District First Semester Lighthouse Award. This recognition is very well deserved as Mr. Moore has served in this role for many years and is a strong advocate of the students of Mariner High School. Finally, we held our first Unified Basketball game last week versus Arlington High School. We had a great crowd, band and cheer were awesome and we look forward to a great Unified season.
Celebrating our Marauders!
Mariner Students win Congressional App Challenge!
Mariner High School students Azul Rangel and Sydney Vo won the 2022 Congressional App Challenge for their entry of the app WordToASL, which takes input from the user in the form of any one word, up to twenty-one characters long and translates it into the American Sign Language (ASL) equivalent letter sign. The students created the app as part of an AP Computer Science Principles project. Their goal is to spark an interest in learning ASL in an easy and accessible way for everyone. Schedule Changes for Second Semester
The start of 2nd semester is Monday February 6th. Students, check your 2nd semester schedule in Qmaltiv, hardcopies will not be printed. Semester schedule changes will only be made for the following reasons:
- Missing a prerequisite, missing a graduation requirement (seniors only)
- Misplacement (wrong class level), prior completion of grad requirement
- Missing a class altogether, or teacher request.
Any schedule changes needed for the previously mentioned reasons need to be completed within the first five days of the semester. Students need to fill out a request to change class form from the counseling office. Changes after this time will not be allowed. Schedule change deadline is Friday, February 10th at 12:45 PM.
The year is going by quickly! We will be preparing for 2023-2024 registration in mid-February.
MHS's 2nd Annual Options Night on Wednesday, Feb. 15th, at 6PM
Registration is coming in March. Students and their families are invited to learn more about the many ways to earn college credit while at Mariner during Options Night!
At this informational evening you will hear about the following programs:
College in the High School courses offered at Mariner through Everett Community College
Running Start through Edmonds Community College
ORCA (Ocean Research College Academy) through Everett Community College
Sno-Isle Skills Center
AP (Advanced Placement) courses offered at Mariner

Why take a dual credit course while still in high school? There are many advantages, including:
Starting your college transcript while in high school
Paying for college credits at a drastically reduced (sometimes free) rate
Challenging yourself to higher level coursework
Taking courses that help you learn a trade or pursue a certification toward employment
We look forward to seeing you and your Marauder on February 15th at 6PM in the Commons! Food and childcare will be provided.
If you’re unable to attend, but are still interested in having some details, connect with your MHS counselor or administrator.

Resources
Greetings from the Library!
As we prepare for the upcoming remodel, students are working with their English teacher and myself to get signed up for a Sno-Isle Library card. The Sno-Isle library card is free. It will allow our students to access digital content including eBooks, audiobooks, on-line databases, online comic books, newspapers, magazines, and movies. Students can also visit one of the many Sno-Isle library branches to checkout books and take advantage of printing, teen programing and other on-site amenities. Students will be signing up for library cards in February. Staff from the Sno-Isle Public library will be doing presentations for classes at the end of February through March. We are excited to provide students this opportunity.
Warmly,
Stephanie Wilson

Stay Connected!
The Mukilteo School District uses the ParentSquare communication platform for district, school and teacher communications. ParentSquare provides a secure way for the district, school principal, teachers, staff and families to send and receive school and class information, share pictures and files, see calendar items, sign up to volunteer and much more ... all in one place!
Log in to the ParentSquare webpage here. You may also log in through the app on your mobile device (instructions to download the free app is at the bottom of this page).
Watch a ParentSquare overview video in English or Spanish to learn more about the platform. ParentSquare automatically generates an account for each parent/guardian, using your preferred email address or phone number, so you will receive communications from your school and the district. However, you must “activate” your account to use the two-way features of the tool.
By activating your account, you’ll be able to:
- Choose to receive information instantly or once a day at 6 p.m. (digest setting)
- Communicate in your preferred language
- Comment on school postings to engage in your school community
- Direct message teachers and staff with translation support
- Sign up for family-teacher conferences
- Sign forms and permission slips ... and more!
Information and news about Mariner High School are available in a variety of formats. This year, you will receive a phone message and email from the district if we close or delay school. This helps ensure we reach everyone, including those without an email address on file, before students stand outside at a bus stop, and before parents leave for work. As usual, school delays or closures will be posted on the district website and posted through FlashAlert, which also feeds into mainstream local news feeds.
