Freshman Field Day
The Civic Leaders, in collaboration with the physical education department and the Freshman Academy, prepared and organized our annual Freshman Field Day. The Civic Leaders created peer-designed lessons and activities about respect to present to freshmen. During this time, the Civic Leaders showed the freshmen why respect is important and how to show respect. The Civic Leaders also worked with the freshmen in team building activities. Together they created a team flag and team chant as they prepared for the fun and competitive field events. Then, freshmen and Civic Leaders took to the field for a friendly competition. Team building games and exercises were created by Mr. Brown and the physical education department. From relay races to three legged races, the freshmen stayed involved and had a great time promoting sportsmanship and teamwork. It truly was a great day to be a freshman Husky!

Nurse's Corner
While seasonal influenza (flu) viruses can be detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The flu affects people in different ways. Some have mild symptoms while others are sick for many days. Depending on your age and symptoms, the flu can be very serious and lead to hospitalization or even worse. The flu virus infects the nose, throat and lungs, and can cause a wide range of complications. Ear infections, sinus infections, and pneumonia are a few of the flu complications.
Your best defense from getting the flu is to wash your hands frequently and get the flu shot. The effectiveness of the flu shot varies from year to year, but you should still protect yourself and others from getting the flu. The flu vaccine can keep you from getting the flu and protect others around you who are more vulnerable to the flu. The flu shot keeps you from getting more serious side effects from the flu, protects pregnant women and their newborns, and may help your symptoms be milder.
Things that you can do to prevent the flu:
Get the flu vaccine
Try to avoid close contact with sick individuals
Limit contact with others if you are sick to prevent the spread of the illness
The CDC recommends that you stay home for at least 24 hours after your fever is gone without the use of fever-reducing medications
If your symptoms worsens you should seek medical attention
Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it
Wash your hands with soap and water, if not available use an alcohol-based hand rub
Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth to prevent the spread of germs
Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with germs
Please speak with your medical professional about the flu and the vaccine to discuss your best options to keep healthy during this season. You may also visit the CDC website at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm for more information.
Giving Garden
On Saturday September 23rd, a dedicated group of volunteers met at the high school to plant apple trees in the courtyard as part of The Giving Garden. A special thank you to our students, staff, and parents for devoting their time to assist with this project. Students in our autism program will be given the task of taking care of the garden as part of their life skills curriculum.
Matawan Regional High School would like to thank Jackie from Sunshine Girls Charities for the donation of the The Giving Garden.
Week of Respect
During the month of October we celebrate Respect week. During this week the Civic Leaders worked tirelessly to help spread respect throughout the school. Even though this is a concept that all students should be practicing daily, the Civic Leaders generated creative and interactive activities to help inspire other students to be more aware of how to respect themselves, their peers, their teachers, and their school.
The Civic Leaders started the week off by initiating an activity they trademarked “Respect the Rainbow.” Students were given a specific color of paper where they were encouraged to write what they respect. Each day of the week was assigned a new theme. Students wrote about self respect, peer respect, family respect, and school respect. This developed a collaborative rainbow that showed how much we respect each other and our community.
Throughout the week students also participated in a "pass it along" activity. Civic Leaders started the activity by completing a random act of kindness. Once that act of kindness was completed, the person had to "pass it along." During the week students posted pictures to social media exhibiting their random acts of kindness and proving they could pass it along.
On Wednesday the school showed their differences and diversity by participating in wacky Wednesday. People were encouraged to dress up in their wackiest outfit to promote their differences and to show respect to the diversity within our school.
This week always brings the school together in the beginning of the year and really promotes a safe and inclusive environment. Thank you to everyone who participated!
Week of Respect
The art department created a display of painted rocks in the courtyard. Students are encouraged to take a rock and spread kindness.

The autism program at Matawan Regional High School took a trip to Sandy Hook with the Mrs. Hodnicky and the oceanography classes where they were able to collect specimen and observe marine life. Students in the program will care for the species that were caught as part of their science curriculum. The trip was an absolute success and a great day for all.
