Newsletter
Tēnā koutou e te whānau,
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Rosehill College families for supporting the home learning days on Tuesdays. I realise that this is not an ideal situation to be in, but being able to manage staff absences due to illnesses has not been an easy task to manage nor has it been easier with the restrictions lifted over the past week. Earlier I emailed explaining that rolling year levels for distance learning caused other concerns and issues and our Juniors missed a tremendous amount of learning. There is an assumption being made that the absence of staffing and winter illnesses has passed and we should be OK to return to school, unfortunately we are still experiencing high staff absenteeism.
With NCEA exams fast approaching it is important that students put in the extra time into their studies and where possible attend the workshops that are available. There has also been a space in the library that is available on Tuesdays for students to access.
Last week I sent a message via our school newsletter regarding the Year 13 uniform. Since this email I have received many questions, mainly from current Year 12 students and with valid information for their argument for not moving into the school uniform next year.
As the new Principal starting at the beginning of Term 3, I have observed and had to deal with:
- Outside community people entering the school grounds in non-uniform looking like Year 13 students
- Juniors wearing non-uniform items, and walking in and out of the school grounds as if they are Year 13 students, including leaving during the Year 13 study break periods.
- The standard of non-uniform clothing worn by current Year 13 students does not reflect an 'environment of excellence', including many wearing clothing that is not professional and or suited for school. I have seen students wear crop tops, gumboots, Onesie outfits, ripped jeans and or clothing that is worn out on a Saturday evening etc.
The social psychology of dress is something I do take seriously and I fully understand the impact of how certain clothing/dress can impact on one's mental and social well-being, so ensuring a standard uniform (Which I might add, is a common practice in many workplace environments) across the school removes any pressure of how and what to wear.
All Year 13 students will receive a FREE sweatshirt specifically for the Year 13 cohort. We will send information out to whānau in regards to how and where to collect their sweatshirts for 2023. They will be expected to wear their current school uniform in 2023.
It was 1995 when Rosehill College last had a uniform change. I think it is due for a change as our school community has changed, so has the world - but the uniform has not.
There will be a Uniform Committee in 2023 to ensure our future school uniform adheres to the guidelines of the HR’s Guidelines. This committee will consist of Board members, parents, staff members and students. There will be a total of 8-10 positions as this is a big undertaking, and applications of interests will be sent out Term 1, Week 4 2023.

Further Workshops for NCEA Literacy and Numeracy
We are offering Further Assessment Opportunities for Level 1 English 90052, 90053 and 90856, and Level 1 Mathematics 91026, 91029 and 91035 after the practice exams (Monday 26th September, Wednesday 28th September and Thursday 29th September).
The need for some Further Assessment Opportunities has arisen because of the disrupted year, with both staff and student absences impacting student achievement. Details of the specific standards offered will be published next week.
While all students are able to undertake a Further Assessment Opportunity if the standard is offered in their course, the length of time available for workshops means that the workshops will focus on the skills and knowledge necessary to achieve the standard.
Some students (and parents/caregivers) will receive a personal invitation to the workshops because not achieving these particular standard/s will impact their capacity to achieve their NCEA.
Other students who wish to attend a Further Assessment Opportunity will need to register their name and the standard/s by contacting Mr Clarke (j.clarke@rosehillcollege.school.nz). These students should be aware that attending a workshop may disrupt learning and revision toward external achievement standards in other courses because students will miss regular classes to attend these workshops.
Study / Revision Advice
1. Register on the NZQA site a Learner Login to access standards, past papers, and sample answers.
2. Know from the Student Portal or Tutor Group Teacher what credits have been gained and what are still to obtain.
3. Complete all internals by the end of this Term.
4. Aim for 14 credits per subject including the externals.
5. Take advantage of subject tutorials and further opportunities to gain credits.
6. Know what is in the exam.
7. Have a study timetable - 3 x 30 minute sessions per day.
8. Study little chunks repeated often, in quiet.
9. Phones are a distraction - parents should have them during study time.

Items can be returned to the Resource Room, Library, Sports Office or the Student Office. We greatly appreciate your support.
Confiscated Items
Items that have been confiscated can be collected by the caregivers of the student every Friday afternoon between 3.20pm and 4pm at the Student Office. These items need to be signed for by the caregiver.
Any items not collected by the end of term will be donated to a local charity.
Lost Property
There is a large amount of lost property at the Student Office; students can collect items at interval and lunch time only. If these items are not collected by the end of term, they will be donated to a local charity.

Term 3 is nearly over which means summer holidays are just around the corner. Children and teens who don’t read much over the long summer holidays can lose gains they've made in their reading levels and fluency over the year. This is true for all children, but especially for children who are already struggling readers. Children who keep reading over the summer holidays can avoid the 'summer slide' and may even make reading gains for the start of the next school year.
We are pleased to say that we are offering our Summer Reading programme again this year. Students can borrow up to 10 books from the library for the summer holidays. They will also have full access to our huge selection of eBooks and Audiobooks online.
If you or your child are interested, please collect a permission slip from the library. It is important to note that summer reading is about reading for pleasure and not studying. Your child may choose books that are easy to read or that they have read before, please encourage them regardless of their book choice.
Click here for more information about how you can support your child with summer reading this year.
