A Note From Me
I couldn't resist the background. I know we have one week and one day left but doesn't that beach look relaxing? One of my very favorite spots on earth is Topsail Island in North Carolina. (I'm convinced Nicolas Sparks writes from this beach about stories that happen on this beach.) While the beach is not pristine like Destin Florida's beaches or packed with interesting people and sites, it is full of memories. That is why I love it so much. About fifteen years ago, my mom and her sisters decided to start a tradition of getting their girls (and their small children) together for a week at Topsail Island. It is about a hour's drive from home - away from home responsibilities and the men! Each summer the trek was made by at least 20 family members to this one yellow house. Obviously, most of our moms don't make the trek for the week. Most of the children from those early years are in college, married, or out on their own and doing their own thing. Now, there are new babies. But I still have about eight first cousins (there's 30 of us in all) that show up sometime during the week. We bring with us as many second generation cousins as will come. Some bring some men (husbands.) To help with the cost, some bring friends. But regardless, it is always on the calendar - every year.
What brings us back every year? Is it the sand? Is it the yellow house? Is it the absence of responsibility? Is it the freedom to sleep or layout all day? Is it the waves? I think not! It is absolutely the people! There is no doubt, it is the cousins - friends - who pull me back every year. My mom is not into the beach scene but she goes, too - every year. "Joy, I'm going if you're going."
As I sit here and weep over the turn of events at the end of this year, it comes back to the people. I am going to miss each of you more than anyone can ever understand. Many have been so sweet and supportive. I have many kid notes of encouragement and support. These notes will be cherished for decades to come. The experience I've had for the last nine years can not be replicated. You have taught me so much about being friends, being professionals, being faithful, being dedicated to improving your craft. Thank you for showing me what it means to standing up for your students, standing up for each other, and standing up for yourselves.
Love you all,
Joy
