Thanks Oster Cougars for showing your school pride on Friday!
Message from Mrs. Taormina
Every year I am asked to address a few traffic issues that occur around our school. Those of us that drive to the school in the morning knows the frustration of traffic. More than likely you’ve asked yourself if what you saw or did was legal. Most people don’t violate the traffic laws intentionally; it’s usually a case of “I didn’t know I couldn’t do that, or just need to do it one time" So, in order to prevent any costly mistakes, I am providing this list-
In no particular order:
Speeding (25 mph in most school zones) - CVC 22350
Driving through stop signs without stopping - CVC 22450
Disobeying traffic signs (No Left Turn, No Turn on Red, No U-Turn, etc.) - CVC 21461
Driving in the bike lane (sometimes lining up to turn into the school) - CVC 21209
Driving while talking on your cell phone (including the school parking lot) - CVC 23123(a)
Texting, updating Facebook, reading emails, etc- CVC 23123.5(a)
Blocking an intersection (gridlock) - CVC 22526
Stopping or parking * in the red zone CVC 22500
*Parking (leaving your car unattended) vs stopping (remaining in your car)
Not wearing a seatbelt (driver and passengers) - CVC 27315 & 27360
Jaywalking or crossing outside of a crosswalk when available - CVC 21955
Regarding bicycles, I would also like to remind parents that any person under the age of 18 HAS to wear a helmet. This includes scooters, skateboards, rollerblades, etc. Basically, if it is person-powered, kids have to wear helmets. Everyone who rides a bike also has to be on the right side of the roadway. You can not ride against traffic. If your child rides, skates, scoot, or blades to school, please make sure that they are wearing a helmet and are being safe.
Most parents are not performing unsafe driving or pedestrian maneuvers. What I’ve noticed is that most of the violations happen within 10-15 minutes of the school drop-off and pick-up times. So if you can get to school a few minutes earlier, you’ll probably be able to avoid these traffic issues. Another great way to avoid all of the vehicle traffic is to park several blocks away and walk into the school. The advantage to this is you get a nice parking spot, you have a few extra minutes with your children before and at the end of school and you avoid all the headache of driving in traffic around the school.

San Jose Public Library Cards for our Students
Union School District and the San Jose Public Library have partnered to issue all of our USD students a digital library card that can be used to access books and more at San Jose Public Libraries, SJPL.org, and through the Sora app. Your student's digital library card is a fourteen digit number, beginning with 211935 and ending in your student's USD student ID number, <<Student ID>>. Add however many zeros are needed to reach fourteen digits. For example, if my student's ID number is 675655, their digital library card number would be 21193500675655. I've added two zeros so that the total number of digits in the number is fourteen. Your student's PIN is their four digit birthdate. For example, if their birthday is November 3rd, their PIN would be 1103. If your student was given a library card number last year, the number is the same and they may continue to use it. If your student joined us after September 1st, 2021, their digital library card will be available to use very soon. For instructions on how to access SJPL resources via the Sora app on USD devices, please view these PDF slides. <<For TK-1st: To sign in with Google, please use your student's USD Google ID:<USD Google ID>> and password<<USD Password>>. For information on SJPL usage policies, please visit https://www.sjpl.org/studentcard. If you have any questions, please email Dina Rabago at rabagod@unionsd.org or open a support ticket. Happy Reading!
