Kentucky Safe Schools Week: October 16th-22nd

Cyber Bullying Resources for Families

The Kentucky Center for School Safety announces this year’s Kentucky Safe Schools Week, is set for October 16-22, 2022.

This year’s theme is “Create a Ripple Effect” and the focus will be on the fact that no act is ever too small to make an impact. When you create a difference in someone’s life, you not only impact their life, you impact everyone influenced by them throughout their lifetime.

Title I and How It Makes a Positive Impact on Our School

We loved sharing the positive impact that family engagement has on our learning community during Wilmore 101 in September. We had 130 participants! We love partnering with you. Here are some reminders about Title I at Wilmore and our Family Engagement policy that outlines

The School-Family Learning Agreement will be shared digitally and in print at the beginning of each school year during back to school events, including, but not limited to: grade level orientation, open house, and/or fall family-teacher conferences. At one of the back to school events listed above, all stakeholders are encouraged to review and sign the policy and learning agreement. The School-Family Learning Agreement outlines how families, school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved academic achievement and other factors for student success.

We look forward to seeing you at Fall Conferences!

Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest

Book Character Pumpkin Decorating Contest at WES

It’s time for a pumpkin/gourd decorating contest of your favorite book character! It's easy and fun for everyone!

If your family decides to participate in the WES Pumpkin Decorating Contest, entries may be brought to school during the week below. If a student is unable to carry their pumpkin it may be dropped off in the front office.

Drop off entries between Monday, October 24th through Wednesday, October 26th. Voting will take place on Thursday, October 27th. Winners will be announced on Friday, October 28th.

CONTEST RULES:

• Participation is optional! No obligation to participate. All students will have an opportunity to enjoy the pumpkins and vote for their favorites even if they don’t enter a pumpkin in the contest. You may use pumpkins or gourds or both to create your project.

Absolutely no carved entries. Pumpkins/gourds that have carved, poked, or punctured skin will be returned or disposed of because they rot, attract bugs, and smell.

• To decorate, you can use paper, glue, paint, markers, pipe cleaners, fabric, or other craft items on the pumpkin. Let your creativity soar! In my experience spray paint works best!

• Your pumpkin does not have to be real. You are always welcome to decorate a fake pumpkin. These will last forever!

• Projects must represent a book character. On the entry form, you must write the title and author of the book. There are books about everything so don’t feel like this limits your creativity. Just Google and find a book title! If you have a copy of the book, you can send it with your completed pumpkin.

• This is a home project and entries should be done mostly by the students, but parents or other family members may help.

• Do not write your name anywhere on the project. When you bring your pumpkin to WES library, Mrs. Smith, Ms. Thompson, or Mrs. Adams will take your pumpkin and entry form and assign it a number.

• Pumpkins will be sent home on Friday, October 28th. If a student is unable to take their pumpkin on the bus it will need to be picked up. Pumpkins not picked up will be thrown away.

Students and staff will vote for their favorite pumpkin in each grade level.

Each Grade level will have a first, second and third place winner that will be voted on by all students and staff!

Winners will be given a $5 gift card to The Local Confectionary, thanks to our generous PTO!

Bike or Walk to School Day

On Wednesday, October 26th Wilmore Elementary students are invited to bike or walk to and from school. The Wilmore Police Department will escort bikers and walkers to and from school. We will gather in the Wilmore United Methodist Church parking (209 East Main Street) at 7:15 and will leave the parking lot via police escort at 7:20. The police escort at dismissal will begin at 2:40 and will lead our group back to the church parking lot.

If your child will be participating in the Bike or Walk to School day to RETURN to the church parking lot, please complete the permission slip and return to the front office by Tuesday, October 25th. You do not have to complete a permission slip if your child is riding or walking to school during the morning escort. We only need a permission slip for students that will be dismissed from Wilmore Elementary on Wednesday afternoon to participate in the return to the church via police escort.

All participants are encouraged to wear a helmet and review bike safety guidelines prior to participation.

Permission slips will be printed and sent home for all families.

Check out our September Dojo and Office Discipline Referral Data

Here is the September PBIS (behavior) Data based on Office Discipline Referrals. Our students and staff review this data to set goals for the upcoming month.

We asked students to work together in grade level teams to make safer choices on the playground in October and use their words instead of physical interaction to solve their problems. We discuss this each week during Wellness Wednesday and during our daily social emotional lessons.

If you have questions about reading the graphs or need further details about data, please reach out to Ms. Thompson, Ms. Johnson, or Ms. Sasha.

We are looking for family representatives to join our PBIS team to review the data, create motivational incentives for positive behavior, and ensure that we are maintaining a safe learning environment. Reach out to Ms. Thompson if you're interested in volunteering your time once a month to meet with our committee.

Have you Paid the Technology Fee for Elementary Students in Infinite Campus?

Over the last five years, we’ve added 3,000 Chromebooks to our inventory to ensure that each elementary student has access to a device. With these new Chromebooks, the need for replacement, repairs and maintenance (i.e. screen replacement, missing keys, broken ports) has become a large need. In order to provide continued maintenance of these devices, we’ve added an annual $25 technology fee to each elementary student’s Infinite Campus account (fee may be adjusted, based on free and reduced lunch status). Thank you for partnering with us to provide the best educational opportunities for all JCS students.

Families will pay this fee by accessing your Infinite Campus parent portal and selecting the fees tab. If you have questions, please reach out to Ms. Thompson or Ms. Rachel Williams

Understanding Your Child's Report Card

On Monday, November 7th we will host Teacher Conference Day. We hope that you'll make time to visit us in person or virtually to review your child's progress during the 1st Nine Weeks of learning.

Here is a resource that may help you better understand your child's report card.

How does the grading key work?

A standards-based report card shows a student's progress toward state and district expectations and provides more specific information by breaking each subject into multiple standards, which identify specific skills. This enables caregivers and students to see student's specific strengths and areas of focus. The standards-based report card places an emphasis on skills, not scores. The goal is for every child to be successful in every standard. The standards provide a clearer picture of where your child is on the continuum toward the year-end goal.

Eating Lunch with Your Child

Many of you have asked and we are excited to announce that we will invite families to eat lunch with their students on advertised days. Each month we will share communication about hosting visitors in the cafeteria. We will reserve a special location in our hall of flags or the Memory Garden (weather permitting) for you and your child. We want you to enjoy your child and learn more about their school experience, so we will not invite friends to be included in the special lunch. This is to protect our students and their dietary needs.

Until we are able to accept debit/credit payments, any caregiver or visitor will need to bring EXACT CHANGE with either cash or check. We are NOT able to make change. If exact change is not provided, any change due will be deposited onto the student's account.

**Any adult or visitor meals (including children) are $2.90 for Breakfast and $4.85 for Lunch. Meals are provided to all JCS students at NO COST.

All visitors MUST check-in at the front office through our Raptor Technology system and will be invited to the cafeteria only. Please plan to exit the school when your child's homeroom teacher picks up their class.
