Union Adult Learning Center
April 2021
We have all learned so many lessons over the course of this historic period, both good and not so good. One thing that we can all certainly take away from this is the perseverance that our staff and students have shown us. We have shifted, pivoted, stopped, and started again. It is that perseverance that will carry us past this and into the next chapter.
ESL Teacher Donna Johnson
Donna Johnson joined the ESL Team at Union Adult Learning Center in 2019. She had worked Internationals in her church many years ago, before becoming a middle school English teacher. She went to college at The University of Tulsa as an adult and graduated with her Master’s in Reading. She taught in Broken Arrow and in Texas and retired after 25 years in education.
She began working with Internationals again at her church several years ago and when she learned there was an opening to teach ESL students at Union, she could not wait to apply.
She loves meeting and getting to know the people and finding the best way to help them succeed in America. She says she can’t imagine doing anything more fulfilling.

HSE Teacher Janet Shaffer
Janet graduated from the University of Tulsa in 1975 with a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education with an emphasis in math. She began teaching in the fall of that same year, teaching math to 6th, 7th and 8th graders at Union Middle School (where the current 6/7 Grade Center is located). Over the next 31 years, she taught middle school math, Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1 and Geometry....earning her secondary math certification in 1980. During her years at Union, she was a cheerleading sponsor, FCA huddle leader, department head, served on several committees, Oklahoma FCA Sponsor of the Year, Union Jr High Teacher of the Year, UCTA District Teacher of the Year and OEA Zone 14 Teacher of the Year. In the spring of 2006, she retired from teaching and started Bible School that fall. After Bible School, Janet tried a different career by working as a drive-thru teller at the Tulsa Federal Credit Union. About 4 years later, she left the credit union and started substitute teaching for Union Public Schools. In the August 2016, she switched to teaching HSE/GED classes at the Asbury Learning Center with UPS, along with substituting for Union friends.
Janet grew up with 3 siblings, 2 parents and a dog. She has lived in California, Kansas, Washington and Oklahoma. She has 4 nieces, 3 nephews, 2 g-nephews and 8 g-nieces and one great on the way. She is very active in her church, loves to read Christian fiction, spends time with friends and family, and volunteers for NE OK FCA and for Compassion International. Since 1983, she has sponsored 3 children through Compassion International and is currently helping a fourth.
Janet believes she has found her niche with UALC HSE program. She enjoys helping students one on one with math and seeing them earn their high school diploma. She hopes to spend the next 5-10 years working in the HSE program.

Warrior's Refuge
Warrior's Refuge is a grassroots ministry that focuses on helping those that get forgotten through the cracks with a hand up, not a hand out. We help bring broken pieces back together in lives through hope!
We picture Christ and his heart for ALL of HIS children. We picture him never saying "No, that isn't my area"... and follow suit.
We help house people off the street that live in homelessness, Help find and create jobs for those needing work, bring food and necessities directly to friends in need, purchase ID cards for those without them, gather donations of clothing, household goods, toiletries, feminine products, baby items for newborns, vehicles and so so much more! We are a great place to find resources as we network with other ministries and organizations. If there is a will there is a way....
