FIRST GRADE
First graders are practicing beat and rhythm. They have been learning the difference between the two. The first graders have also learned the Horn Welcome Song. Please click on your child's classroom video to hear them perform.

SECOND GRADE

THIRD & FOURTH GRADES
The third and fourth graders have been learning how to make music as a community. They have also been reviewing concepts from last year and preparing to play xylophones. FIFTH & SIXTH GRADES
The fifth and sixth graders have been working on mallet technique while playing with balloons. The percussion piece that they learned through body percussion and then transferred to mallets and balloons. The fifth graders performed the piece straight while the sixth grade students performed the piece in two part canon. Please click on your child's classroom video to see them perform.

Meet the Music Teacher
Kate Hagen teaches general music in the Iowa City Community Schools District and has over 18 years of experience. She earned her license in Music Therapy from the University of Iowa and Masters of Music Education from the University of Northern Iowa. She has spent many summers studying a variety of music teaching methods, including Kodály and World Music Drumming. She has successfully completed Levels I, II, and III in the Orff-Schulwerk approach. Currently, she is the president-elect of First Iowa Orff.
