Principal’s Message
Dear University Elementary Families,
Happy New Year! It is so hard to believe we are half way through our school year. This first week back at school has been a very productive one. The teachers are all involved in implementing either a classroom project or joint classrooms projects. Over the next few months there will be a variety of public presentations to demonstrate their newly gained knowledge. Four of our teachers are being supported by Sonoma State University Education Department in acquiring their Maker Certification. Thank you, Dr. Ayala! Making/creating is an important part of project based learning. The teacher’s certification will allow our school to be eligible to apply for grants to support a Maker room. Items such as 3D printers and a variety of tools to support project products.

Transitional and Kindergarten Registration
Our open enrollment period has opened for the 2018-2019 school year. Please see Dana in the office if you have a young student to enroll. We have a number of school tours available if your older student did not attend here for kindergarten. Please let your neighbors and others you may know that this is registration time too. We are actually accepting students at all grade levels for next year. You can support our school by helping us grow our student enrollment.
Charlotte’s Web
Our former principal, Gaylene Rosaschi, is joining us as a volunteer to ensure that our first official school play is a success. It is with a grateful heart that we welcome her expertise and support. Student auditions have been held this week. We have had a good turnout. Students will be given their roles along with a rehearsal schedule and student contract to sign on Wednesday, January 17th in front Mrs. Barksdale’s room (K1).
Library
Our library is in its second year and our book collection is growing! Our proceeds from last year’s sales coupled with PTA donations allowed us to order $1000 worth of additional books. We recently received these books and our librarian, Mrs. Brawner, is working to get them entered into our check out system and onto our shelves for check out as soon as she can. We also received $1,821 in grant money from the Cotati Rohnert Park Education Foundation to apply towards leveled books for beginning readers and books to support research projects in the upper grades. They too have been ordered, received, and placed on the shelves. Lastly, we have been allotted $10,000 from our district budget to support our library collection. Mrs. Brawner and I are in the process of fine tuning these orders and they will be ordered soon. Our beautiful library shelves are filling up! The students are finding great enjoyment in visiting the library and checking out books each week.
Save the Date: Scholastic Book Fair is coming up 2/26 – 3/2. We will be looking for volunteers to help set-up and run the fair. Please look at your calendars. A sign up genius link will be coming out at the beginning of February.
Garden News
I have received many compliments on how quickly we were able to get our garden up and going last spring. The garden serves many purposes with regards to our students. Not only is it a means to support concepts within our science standards and support community involvement but it is also a spot to relax and enjoy nature. Our students have been enjoying the outdoor garden classes once a week with Mrs. Norstrom. The students really light up with curiosity and enthusiasm each week as they head out to discover the lesson topic for the week. We are so very fortunate to have a garden committee that is committed to supporting/acquiring the funding to provide our outdoor garden classroom teacher. The garden committee has been busy creating and organizing an application packet with the history of our garden, our goals and applicable photos. A flyer to send out to community businesses has been created to elicit support and then we also have a Plumfund account and an Amazon wish list where friends and family can show their support. Please see links below. If you are interested in joining the Garden Committee, we meet the last Monday of the month at 4:30. Our outdoor garden classes are on hold for the month of January and will resume once more in February. Classes will be held indoors when necessary due to rain.
Learning how to build soil by creating habitat for beneficial insects. Our garden team is amazing!
