A Message from Principal Whitehead...

I know that this past week was one of power outages, icy weather, and uncertainty. I am so thankful for all the people who worked hard in tough conditions to get things back to normal! It is in times like these that I appreciate the schedules and rhythms that school provides; I am so glad to return to see your children and their teachers.

Since we missed most of last week, some of our Interim testing has been rescheduled. It is imperative that you parents and guardians help JMS as we prepare our students for meeting goals and ensuring success. Our eighth graders will be taking the Science Interim on Monday and the Social Studies Interim on Wednesday. Then the whole school will be taking the Reading Interim on Thursday. On the nights before these tests, we would love for parents to check that their child has his/her chromebook and that it is charging overnight so that students are prepared the next day. Isn't it funny how we have exchanged No.2 pencils for laptops? The thinking is still the same, though, so thank you for your help in supporting our students!

Another thing to be thinking about is this week's Special School Board Meeting on Wednesday, February 8th. Among the topics being discussed are the proposed school bond election and the new attendance zones. Your voice matters. We want to get as much public input as possible. The meeting starts at 6 pm at 508 N. 5th Street in Jarrell.

An additional item to consider as we move further along is Course Selections. Our altered schedule last week caused some rescheduling for the Rising grade levels. We are still meeting with Future Freshmen on Monday night at the High School at 6pm. Originally, we intended to meet with Future 6th Graders on Wednesday, but we want to ensure every parent has an opportunity to attend the Board Meeting that night, so we will reschedule and post the updated time soon.

Attendance Procedure

Friendly Reminder: If your student is going to be absent from school for any reason please email our attendance clerk Ashley Edwards at ashley.edwards@jarrellisd.org with any parent notes, excuse letters or doctors notes.

THIS WEEK IN SPORTS

If your child is interested in participating in Track, please attend the Track Parent Meeting at 5PM on Monday in the Cafeteria.

We would like to congratulate the 8th grade Girls A TEAM; they are DISTRICT CHAMPS! They were 13-1 all season!

The 7th grade Girls A TEAM placed 2nd at DISTRICT! Way to go Lady Cougars!

Counselor Connections

This week is National School Counseling Week! School counselors help students in more ways than you may know. This week we celebrate them as a part of National School Counseling Week 2023. Learn more about the role of this essential profession: https://www.schoolcounselor.org/role

Every student deserves a school counselor to help with academic achievement strategies, managing emotions and applying interpersonal skills, and planning for postsecondary options. School counselors are #HelpingStudentsDreamBig. Parents and students can visit the JMS and JHS website to learn more about the counseling program and services provided. Also, links to additional resources, including some fun was to explore mindfulness to reduce stress.

Make Your Mark Monday! Starting on Monday, February 6, we would like to promote college, career, and military readiness every Monday. We encourage everyone to wear their favorite college/career/military themed shirt every Monday! We know JMS students are going to make their mark in this world in great ways!

Helping Students Dream Big! To continue promoting the school counseling program, on Friday, students are invited to wear pajama pants for our Dream Big theme! Footwear and other clothing should be within the normal dress code.
