From the Desk of Dr. Rodriguez
I can't remember a time when there wasn't a book in my father's hands. It didn't matter what it was -- an old classic like The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn or a pretty terrifying one like It by Stephen King -- they were all precious in my father's eyes. He would tell us all about the book he was reading (yes, even the Stephen King ones) every Saturday and Sunday morning when we would have breakfast together. The enthusiasm and passion he showed about reading was amazing -- he couldn't wait to finish breakfast to continue reading! His love for fiction inspired me to become the connoisseur of books I am today, and the example he set in my life is one that can never be measured. I am forever grateful to my father for setting such a beautiful example in my life and for having shown me the worlds we can dive into just by picking up a book.
Obviously, a love for reading isn't something that is simply taught in the home. As educators, instilling a love of reading in our students is a critical component of our vision at Riviera. Fundamentally, a strong foundation in reading is at the core of every other subject area in school -- students need it to comprehend word problems in math to determine the operation they should use to find the solution; they need it to understand why some words are in bold type and others italicized in their social studies textbook; and they need to be able to decode the genus, species, family, and phylum of the countless creatures that roam the earth. Reading is also critical to succeed in life! Whether it's reading the menu of our favorite restaurant or reading the fine print when we close on the purchase of our first home, reading is an essential life skill that we need command of at all times. This week, we celebrated the writings of one very famous, much loved children's author, Dr. Seuss, during Read Across America Week. Students donned their craziest hats, outfits, socks, and pajamas to recognize and appreciate the work of someone who has inspired so many to write their own books and create their own worlds. The writings of Dr. Seuss help educators instill that love of reading by using invented places and characters to tell stories that ignite the limitless imagination each of us has inside. We hope that you have enjoyed this week as much as we have and that you show off your own love of reading by picking up a great book every now and then -- trust me, your children are watching!
Have a wonderful weekend, and make sure to check out next week's Friday at 4:00!
Sincerely,
Dr. Rodriguez

Preschoolers, Bridges, and 3D Printing
Students in Ms. Hughes's class are learning that what they can imagine, they can build! After a thorough unit on construction and building, students designed their own bridges using trusses, arches, and suspension cables. Their individual designs were then compiled to design a bridge they all felt worthy of the hard work they put into their design. Using a program called Tinkercad to finalize the design, students made their way to the STEM Lab to watch their design come to life using the 3D printer. Students learned all about the filament used to 3D print objects and were able to watch the early stages of their bridge being built. The whole printing process took over 8 hours to complete, so a camera was set up in the STEM Lab to live stream the printing. While in class, students watched their creation in real time and were able to drive toy cars over it upon completion. How's THAT for some creativity?! Thank you, Ms. Hughes and Ms. Travieso, for making our students' sketch a reality!
